Zooks are for people that aren't afraid of angles and who have nothing to compensate for

Years ago these were offered as a 'load assist' type package. I believe they now only offer them for some very specific applications- like sprung truck cabs.

Take the spring off and they make a perfect rear shock for drag racing :p couple them with 90/10 fronts and he'd be pulling fully sick 1/4 miles in no time lol. Seriously though that is taking the booty fab to a new level.

I've had my RTC spring holder/adjuster slip in a steering dampner application. I highly doubt the hex key grub screws could provide enough clamping force without wrecking the shock to hold in place in a shock application.Liam wrote:Tears ago these were offered as a 'load assist' type package. It's stupid

You could not pic up a 4x4 mag in the early 90's without it having an ad for these. Will try to dig out an old advert.

they arent steering dampeners they are a kit you buy to retrofit to a shock to increase load carrying capability. called helper springs

Dragbody made his own coil overs with a proper shock and a part store helper spring.
The 50:50 valving in a steering dampener is not suitable for shock valving in a car.

Like I said even as a helper over a normal shock I wouldn't trust the grub screws holding tight enough.badger wrote:they arent steering dampeners they are a kit you buy to retrofit to a shock to increase load carrying capability. called helper springs

not doubting that the grub screws wouldnt hold just simply stating that i highly doubt its actually a steering dampner

hi, i saw this too and sent the seller an email. he said they are genuine tough dog coilovers but im convinced that they arent as i cannot find ANY information on them or coilover conversion kits from tough dog. what i thought it may be is that somebody has used the coil and collar from a RTC damper onto a regular shock absorber.
i cant forsee these being any good at all for flex, as with its nature, the spring will be trying to hold the strut in its central position. maybe just maybe if there was a spring landing like a run of the mill coilover and the spring could seperate and travel up the shock body it would be ok but this setup will forever be fighting itself to stay in the position its been set.
i also noticed how many leaves he has... surely if you were converting to coilover in a leaf sprung car you would take most of the leaves out and only use enough to act as a control arm setup and let the spring and damper do its thing ....

Up until a few years ago the TD RTC dampeners were shocks, they even had TOP stamped on one end, it's only recently that they have used actual dampeners. I've only been told that by people that sell them, who knows maybe they are still shocks?
My guess would be that the ones in the picture are shocks not dampeners.

Ok here it is.
This is in fact, a proper shock from Tough Dog. It is listed as a "Handler" shock and has a 30mm bore. The boys say they havent sold em in years, and it was one of there first products released!
Just as a reference they are listed as part numbers H1364 in the rear and H1101 in he front.
The coil is only rated to about 90lb, and was designed as a helper, rather than a load bearing coil.ie it would not replace the leaf spring and support the weight of the vehicle.
They retailed for sbout $100 each.
SO there you go!
