Headlight wiring upgrade.

Post by Chucky »

I just fitted new lights to the cruiser and now I'm about to wire up a heaver gauge wire harness.
I want to keep the old plugs etc ont he old loom so I can quickly return to standard if needed.
What I am after is a male plug that I can connect to the old standard bulb plug. That is the plug that would normally attach to the headlight buld.
I dont want to just shove in connectors into the exsisting plug.

Some relay bases have a similar layout of pins on the base. You could crack one of those out and use the connector, with the plastic cover being reglued to protect the wiring coming out of it.

What sort of lamps does the old setup have? if they are H4, you can get male ones for this purpose:

I just used ordinary spade lugs into the old socket, then plenty of tape etc (I think I cable-tied the whole thing as well) so they won't come apart.

They are only running a relay so it doesn't matter that they are a bit smaller than the H4 socket.
This is not legal advice.

Thats what I am after chimpboy, do you have a site link for the pic you got?

I was going to resort to the old spade connectors if I really needed too, But I wanted a neater look than the spade connectors and a shite load of electrical tape.

I found those on this site:

... from google. I haven't bought from them. I have seen them before on a few other sites but for my car, like I said I just used spade lugs.

Thanks again chimpboy,
Looking at the website I can build a complete upgrade harness for less than $40 and it's will all be plug in.
I might even take piccys and post how I do it there is enough interest.

Thanks once again chimpy.

What series cruiser? I have a single headlight 62 series and put a seperate relay for passenger low beam, passenger high, driver low and driver high.I have set mine up so that low beam stays on when you hit high beam and it now gives much much better light.

Just something for you to consider.

Absolutely illegal to have hi and low beam on together (ADR's, not just State roadworthy's. AFAIK different monetary fine scales). Good way to blow globes too (too much heat).

Hi Stockhorse, as DANKIA post, if you have H4 globes, you will blow the globes after a very short time.

Hi DANKIA, I don’t know about the legalities but a lot of new vehicles now came with separate low and high and many have the low remain on while high is on.

It's a 80 series.
I just bought new headlights and all 4 are now both hi and low with H4 bulbs.
I will be wiring so all 4 are on low beam and all four are on hi beam at the same time. They will not be able to do both hi and low at the same time thou.

Thanks for the replies, any mroe advice keep them coming.

ALL twin light falcon XRs from ED to AU have the low beams on while the high beams are on
