Urgent help needed with 2.4L Turbo Diesel
I have a 2.4L turbo diesel with 220K on the clock. while giving it a boot full a week back it responded by revving off the gauge (once the right foot came off to change gears) and puor out black/slightly blue smoke. It continued to make a whining noise while revving off the limiter EVEN ONCE I HAD PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF! After it finally killed itself i kicked her over and she run fine for the rest of the day with a strange smell evertime she climbed a hill or overtook.
The next morning the car wouldnt start at all. It turns over, but theres no bang, as though all compression has been lost or it's simply out of feul.
Can anyone help me find out whats wrong without having to tow it to a mechanic who might tell me its not worth fixing.
NB. I recently replaced the radiator after blowing it. Until last week the temp gauge would rise after long drives, even with a new radiator. Mech reckoned i had blown the head gasket but there was no oil in the water and vice versa.
Please help, anyone!!
Cheers
Mitch

Thanks for that mate.
Would it run on its own oil if too much oil was put in during a service?? Had some real w@nkers work on the truck lately and thought the oil level was high after i last got it back for some work.
Turbos been leaking oil, but thought it might be the rings.
Cracked head going mean a new motor?? or is there a cheaper way out of this? quite like the 2.4 turbo, cheap to run.
Thanks again mate

being an '88 its proberly the 2lt 1st series which wasn't prone to cracking heads. before you go fitting new motors just check if your getting bubbles in the radiator. assuming you can get it to start. pay to check if its getting fuel to the injectors.
or if all else fails you can buy my 89 2 door surf as the motor in it hasnt even done 100,000 km yet pm me if your interested its going cheap

2lt
ive had a few issues with mine, personally i would pull the head off and check it before you decide to pull the motor out it could be just a head gasket which is only four hours work to change but if you decide to pull it out let me know i might grab it off you for parts
