I've just recently replaced the motor in my sierra with another 1.3 and I'm having trouble with the timing of the distributor. I dont have a timing light so I just want to get it close enough so the motor runs and will get it properly tuned by a mechanic with a timing light.
When i first started the motor it ran ok but was not quite right and i didnt have enough adjustment in the dizzy to get it right. So I then pulled the dizzy out and turned it to give me more adjustment but I think I went the wrong way.
After I had a bit more of a fiddle and a backfire I decided I was lost and pulled the tappet cover off to have a look where the cam was. Now I'm not sure if im right with my logic but what i did was turn the motor over till no.1 cylinder had just finished its intake stroke and then the timing marks where 10' btdc. I then pulled the dizzy out and got it so that the rotor was just starting to contact the no.1 spark plug. after all this it still wouldnt start or run.
So what am I missing/done wrong?

engine on tdc . in the dissy there is a notch/ line,Not the cap turn your rotor button to the notch/line that is tdc on the dissy. Put it in and see how far it is out , Slowly remove dissy to you can just turn the rotor button, so it will line up with the notch/line and then get a timing light to finish the job.

The cam wants to be just after the intake stroke, not after. And as Boner said, line up TDC on the crank pulley. If you can't find the timing mark on the dizzy then just mark where number one is on the cap and metal base, remove cap and line up the rotor to that mark. If you have it somewhere in the middle of it's adjustment it should run.

Ok now im confused again. I was under the impression its Suck/Squeeze/Bang/Blow. So shouldn't the cam/dizzy be firing just after the suck (intake stroke) at 10 degrees btdc?ScrawnC wrote:The cam wants to be just before the intake stroke, not after. The way I see it if the cam is lined up just before the intake stroke which means its on the exhaust stroke and you line the dizzy up to fire there it will be firing into fuel/air mix with exhaust valve open and wont run.
Sorry to be a pain I'm just trying to understand whats going on so I dont do it again.

Mate just TDC no1 piston, and try what i told you and it will work.I have done it to a few zooks, when its running you can tune it by ear as they are very forgiving motors.
Then tune it with a light.

Haha yah I've done that the last time I played with this sort of stuff so i put pieces of elec tape with the numbers on them so i didn't fark that bit up.christover1 wrote:Make sure spark leads are on correct plugs.

It should be after intake stroke, not before.
How are you getting on with this anyway?
