If i just overtook you head to your nearest mechanic
you will need to pull off the entire thermostat housing assembly
when you do this you will see where it is leaking from and it will look like there is no gasket but there is, its a rubber o ring in an oval shape , i carefully pulled mine out , cleaned out all the corrosion and crap , got the surface nice and flat , cleaned , put a bead of silicon in the groove ( only a little ) and put the o ring back in the groove ( if it is still plyable and not broken) but leave the oring sitting up about 1 mm above the surface , and wipe off any large amount of excess silicone , let it dry for 20 or so mins , while that is drying clean up the thermostat assembly and the other water jacket in the block , add a small amount / thin layer of silicon around water jacket holes , oring and reassemble

some people say not to use silicon in these areas as it can cause further corrosion , but i found unless you do you will keep getting leaks due to the previous corrosion , so unless you want to replace the lot with a new one from nissan , this is a cheaper option and has lasted over 2 years on mine so far

I had the same problem a while ago. I bought the gasket for the vertical surface (behind the assy) and the o-ring, cleaned the surfaces with sandpaper (400) and put it all back together. All good now. I was surprised how corroded the bolts were. I didn't use silicon, but a liquid seal.

i've got a 94 4.2d and i've noticed coolant on the sump and front diff housing i've recently sorted the thermostat housing but this new leak looks like its coming from a small oval plate with two 10mm bolts in it,this must be the bottom of the water pump?(looking up from underneath) is it worth stripping it all and just doing the gaskets or put a new water pump in to? thanksJBE wrote:I had the same problem a while ago.
