zf 22 WTF?

Australia day weekend trip turned short after my auto decided it was only a 2 speed. Firstly no lockup as merged on highway, then 2 mins later no 3rd gear either. Was embarrased having to go home and get the wifes car(sigh, at least it's a dico too, slow and standard though). Any ideas? Who has had gearbox's reco in SEqld and where ??? I want someone who actually knows the gearbox.........

Give MR Auto a call at Redcliffe, they have a mob around the corner that reco them - fairly sure its:

Expect the price to be in the $3 - 4000 mark though. Well that was the quote that I got when mine died, but that was from another mob here in Brisbane. But I ended up getting one second hand that had already been recoed

You should try British off road up on the sunshine coast they sometimes have secondhand boxes lying around . mine coast $5000 but its a little modified.

Yep thats right. They do get Dolphin to do them but that price was a bit high. I have known them to quote high when they are very busy

Try Sunshine automatics At Caboolture. They just did a C6 for me and its been faultless. Cheep aswell ( less for cash) You could try getting the gear for the rebuild from Ashcroft in England then get a local shop to build it.

What Hobie 18 said was about right, a rebuild is around that sport of $$$. If you are a tight-arse like me, look on e-bay or at the wreckers, usually go for around the $800-1K mark. I just sold one for $300 on e-bay with 240K on the clock, needed a kickdown cable though. I sold it as I plan on buying an auto Rangie again sometime soon I hope (work a bit quiet ATM so I have to perservere with the bloody manual.

Rover Owner, a manual conversion is a false economy, fitting a Lt77 isn't what I call a smart move IMO (although I'll swap you my good LT77 for a ZF if you're keen )

Geezuz Trav, $300 for a ZF is chicken feed (assuming it was all working good). I wouldn't bother pulling it out of the damned car for that. I guess there was no transfer with it for that price (or a useless viscous coupling maybe)?

Agree that a Manual conversion isn't a worthwhile step as it's usually the manuals that give the trouble looooong before a ZF gives up the ghost (actually if the manuals don't break the gears then they flog out the main output shaft).

And as for British Off Road, they are no cheaper that MR (and usually dearer in my experience) although I have managed in years gone by to buy ZF's from them for around the $1200 mark if I paid cash, remove them and accept no warranty at all.

Just a thought (remembering that I don't know much about autos), nut maybe you should talk to an auto shop as it might be something simple that has gone wrong (sticky valve or something like that in the valve body). Worth a try before you pull it all apart and spend big $$ on it?

It was cheap, had 240K on the clcok and it was a good unit (no hard shifting, etc...) I expected more for it but I can't have it sitting in my shed not getting used either. It also needed the cooler lines and a kickdown cable, add that to the unit and it would have been around the $700 mark. My Rangie was only $800 in the first place (88 Manual) plus it's cheaper and easier to buy another Rangie with a auto already fitted.

Looking at gettong another auto rangie soon anyway and the current one I'll de-reg and start to part it out to pay for the new project whatever that may be .

try jag rover spares at newmarket (murray) he imports wrecks, etc from japan and the like, my ZF cost $700 (in foldings) with all lines kick down cable, etc 3 or 6 month warranty can't remember which one? came out of a disco with 'under 100k km's' 'apparently'
