feroza...common, annoying problems

Post by 1600dave »

just wondering what people have done, or if anyone makes new door drims and rear panel trims for feroza's, as the factory almost cardboard like ones in mine are rather noisy and annoying, made worse by it being such a short wheelbase and rather stiff. the rear passenger one is the worst, previous owner installed speakers in them, and the left rear is much bigger, and has no support behind it at all.

also, can hear a clicking sound from the rear, i think its the seatbelts or something, is there a fix for this?

heater pipe near clutch pedal gives off quite a bit of heat, even when air is set to cold side, and fan is off, still seems to be air or something coming from somewhere.

car needs new exhaust and manifold and 02 sensor, its not too bad at the moment, but its nearly impossible to overtake at 100, it really struggles. what is the top speed of them (in reality, not from a factory brochure!)

thanks guys,
dave

Welcome dave to the feroza world.
With the back panels I replaced them with 5mm mdf and covered them with carpet, this seemed to quiet the panels down.
Clicking sound might be the rear door moving up and down and a little wd squirted around the seal some times helps
The overtaking over 100 ks is just normal as a 1600 engine in the feroza hasnt got much guts. A tip is to make sure you have a strong wind behind you before you overtake lol :D

Please explain this word "overtaking" - I don't understand if you mean "to overtake" as opposed to "being overtaken". The latter I'm an expert at
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Mine gets along alright with the Applause donk, extractors and 2" system, even with 31's :D

Do you overtake over 100ks alright? And hows your acceleration?

Mine would do ~130 - 140km/h with two people, a luggage pod on the roof and towing a lightly loaded trailer! Found that out when overtaking someone doing around 90km/h.

That was with extractors, electric thermo fan and 235/70 tyres.

With 31's, my acceleration is slightly better than a stocky in good condition on standard tyres :D

She'll never be a race car, but I'm generally pretty happy with performance. On a gazetted-closed road, I've had her up to 130 indicated, so give about another 10k actual speed on top of that.

We camp alot and like yourself we have a roof pod. My feroza has a new engine but I have to rev her real hard to get up them hills. My O2 sensor was replaced and I tune the car often. Mine has extractors and 2inch exhaust. What benefits was the thermo fan?

Thermofan sucks less power from the engine (depending on the temperature). At highway speeds your viscous fan would be creating a load and shouldn't really be needed.

If you haven't go A/C it would be an easy conversion.

I've just done my XL-7 and the power gain is noticeable- in the Feroza the power gain felt the same as when the extractors were fitted.

The engine will rev out a lot more eagerly and run a lot quieter.

I have no troubles overtaking at 100km/h, even 130km/h isnt a problem... She even gets up every hill in 5th with ease too!!!

Top speed, well lets just say that it was past the indicated speed on the speedometer by a long shot... Got to love a small reving motor!

And if you are unhappy with yours mine is for sale!

Make a serious offer and you might have yourself one of the toughest feroza still running a HD-E 1600.

what gearbox does that use? surely not stock!

well its going to a mech tomorrow, so we'll see what done/said besides the obvious exhaust problem.
might make some new trims for it too soon if i can find the time/motivation

As noted in the post, it uses a custom made straight cut syncro gear set within the standard case!

Dont bother with the exhaust..... This one comes with a full mandrel bent 3' exhaust from the turbo back with high flow cat..

let me know how you go, and what thermo you ended up using. i have ac, and would like to keep it, so there isnt much room for anything else in there.

My comment on "easy conversion" was more to do with the A/C causing the engine to run a lot hotter. There is enough space to get a fan in behind the radiator.

Have a look in the FAQ. ;)
