Ford Courier 2.5tdi modifications

Post by justanotherfirey »

G'day New here so bare with me. I have a 2001 2.5tdi Ford Courier Dual Cab ute that I plan on keeping for a while. However it really needs some work on it to get it how I want it. Does anyone have any experience modifying these vehicles. I want the usual lift / snorkel / spotties etc. It's pretty stock standard at the moment apart from Uniden UHF and TJM Bullbar. I eventually want a more powerful diesel engine too......any advice will be appreciated.....no matter how bizarre or expensive.

Thanks for that. The gearbox problems sound scarey. I've just done 100,000km and I'm now a bit concerned about the next 20k. I've got a mate with a courier of the same model and year, he's spent 15 grand on lots of goodies like lifts and side steps and snorkels etc and he tows his camper trailer through places cruisers and patrols avoid (with a quad bike in the tray) and never had an ounce of trouble.....I guess it's just the luck of the draw. I can pretty much garuantee that after reading these posts mine will shit itself in the near future.

I just did a 2.5" exhaust mandrel bent and fitted a snorkel and its like driving a completely different car, as for the gearbox - no problems so far although i treat my vehicles with respect - good value for money i reckon having a courier

From what i hear the gearbox problems are from people towing in 5th gear and not changing gears enough Eg: not going back to 4th when your below 80kms/h.

Here if you want to read.

I was told early ones leaked the oil from the gearbox into the transfer causing dramas, my 2000 model (bought second hand) had low gearbox level, ,overfull transfer, and sucked at 3 - 4 shift. I traded it on a new 2004 Courier (yeah, I know) and was told by the service manager at the dealer that running 10% auto trans fluid mix in the gearbox fixes all, he had a Courier himself, reckoned he was running that mix. I never had a worry with the new truck, which went real good after the straight through 2.5" exhaust (noisy though). I only had that one for about 30000kms tho...
Honestly, most people bag the courier only coz its not a nissan or toyota, not because they have ever driven one...

yes, i have also been told by 4x4 places to use synthetic gearbox oil and it will last for twice as long.

Well I still haven't done anything to the old courier but I did take her to birdsville Races last year and she never skipped a beat. I even managed to get her up Big Red (although I reckon the pistons were popping through the bonnet by the time I got to the top). About the only mod I have so far has been the addition of a pair of Hella pencil spotties up front. They paid dividends on the road at night to birdsville. Thanks for the advice guys. I'd really like to start with a suspension upgrade I reckon followed by decent steel rims and new tyres some custom barwork at the back and then snorkel and 2.5 inch exhaust. AND THEN maybe swap out the engine for a bigger diesel
