What you comping guys done with your trailers

Post by kitacooch »

Am looking to aquire a comp truck in the near future and will be looking for a car trailer and or modified/ing one. Just wondering what you guys have done, maybe post up some pics and show off your good work to give some others some good ideas. ie, working in with some accomodation, work shop etc.
I would like to take my family along for weekends as well but not sure the best way to do this, is 2nd vehicle inevitable or are some of you managing to incorporate sufficient comfortable accomodation for the family, work shop etc.
One idea i had was to get a camper and modify the draw bar so it is removable and get a car trailer long enough to cary the camper over the front of the car trailer, making sure that axle position on the car trailer caters for correct ballencing. This way the family has some comfortable accomodation and i can move the trailer away and set up a work shop.

Hows theft out there in the comps, do you need to lock everything up and bolt everything down??

Any/all ideas, opinions welcome.
cheers

Get onto Johnny Trackabout about his comp trailder. Im pretty sure he has since sold it but he may give you some ideas/pictures from his trailer setup.

Had a camper slide out from under the car trailer. Was a sweet setup. carted his 79 series comp truck, so plenty of room.

Ill have a dig on here for some pics....they are somewhere

I thought about a roof top tent mounted on a frame above the bonnet when I had my skid car.

I had access to a dual cab truck for mine (not that it got that far - but anyway) was thinking a roof top camper over the cab, roll out shade tarp over the tray and recess the floor of the tray inbetween the wheel tracks to create a deep workbay similar to a low hoist, include lights, air and power (inverter).

If you are going to Tow keep in mind the Weight Factor. Unless you Have A Big F Truck trailer, comp truck, spears & camping gear you will be weighing in around 4t (Thats Winch challenge truck) , wich on most 4x4's is elegal. Not that we worry about that to much but if your unlucky enough to have a stack Insurance might not pay.

Jonhy T's Was an Excelent set Up But he Had An F Truck to Tow it.
He is a top Bloke if you emailed him Im sure he would send you some Pics.

You could Look around for A cheap second Hand 4t Truck. A lot of the comp Guys now put them on These as it is 100% Legal. (even if the comp trucks are not even close) We have a 4t Izusu & tow a camper behind that, but if familys come yes that means 2 cars. Ours has a Canopy on the truck so if its just the 2 of us we can sleep in side if the weather is bad & it allso has a ARB tarp on the side for shade & lockable cage so we keep all parts & gear Locked.

look at a small truck. you could pick up a flat bed or beavertail pretty cheap at the moment. a trailer will cost about 5G. then you will be illegally towing it most likely when i truck for 5G wont be the prettiest it will get you there and back if you look after it and remember its a truck.

alot of the QLD winch guys are just buying or using trucks as theyve realised its cheaper and safer to do. plus, you can write it off as a work vehicle if possible and claim the travel as work travel etc.

just some food for thought

FYI for all... there is a trailer for sale at Red Back landscaping supplies at Underwood / Rochedale for $2000. Just saw it yesterday when driving by. Size looks good, wooden floor don't know about towing capacity etc but by the looks of it it may have been used for turf transport.

Could be worth a look at least?

I looked into this last year, rang QLD Transport and they said it can't be done because there is no code for it.
