Nasty Rubbing Sound in NG Pajero

Got issues with my 89 NG Pajero.... as always.... current nasty issue is, whenever the vehicle is left hand near lock steering and hits a bump, it makes a nasty rubbing sound.. it also makes this rubbing sound when driving in 4wd over corrugated roads and tracks.... i've been under the truck more times then I like to think trying to look for rub marks but still yet to find it.... for a while i thought it was the radiator fan rubbing against the shroud around it as it showed signs of it rubbing...

Any suggestions would be appreciate as people think im going nuts.... spoken to my mechanic and old man (ex mechanic) about this and they dont believe me and dont seem too fazed about it.. but i wanna sort this car out soon because i need it for transport and cant afford to have it off the road

what sort of rubbing sound? metal on metal? rubber on metal?

your steering stops on the front need a grease i have the same problem..

Hi Macneil, yeah, originally thought it was the steering stops too.. but they have been greased and the sound is still there... still a deffinant whirring rubbing sound.... like a bolt sticking out and rubbing on the tread of the tyre... but i've looked all over and still no signs...

i know it isnt metal but have u checked the rubber splash gaurds behind the tyre to stop crap from getting into the engine bay?

Can you re-create the noise while the vehicle is stationary with someone bouncing the front end? Sway bar rubbers can sometimes be noisy when dry. The best way is to get someone heavy to jump up and down on the bullbar to make the noise and jump under it with a stethoscope or long screwdriver.

I'd be looking at swaybar rubbers first. Both my boss' old Paj and my current one have that noise, my rubbers are rooted and are being replaced this weekend.

possibly a dry CV joint, the CV boot or the steel strap things that hold the CV boot on?

Hi folks, turned out to be the radiator fan rubbing on the fan shroud at the bottom..... dangit

Now have been faced with the fact, the engine is on its last legs and now need a new power plant....

Is it worthwhile sticking $3000 into a 20yr old vehicle ? Reco 6g72 Engine $2400 and Labour

if its what u want then go for it, i dropped far more than 3g into my NG on a recon engine
