GQ TB42 Overheating!!

Post by DaveS3 »

Now i have searched but i think this is different!

Mates GQ has been overheating for a while, and have changed viscous coupling, cheched radiator (seems ok), hoses are alright and so fourth....

It is duel fuel and a cracked head is common for this model i have been told and the gas makes this worse, so i have been told again!

We drove the car today and it reached halfway very quickly and it has been into hot a few times,
We stoped, slowly took the radiator cap off and there seems as if there is an air leak and the old man says that this is possibly from the head, (being cracked, we think!)

Is this true, or can someone offer an explanation on how/why or what else we can do??

If the head is cracked, where is a good place to get it fixed?

Thanks

from what i believe if the head is cracked or head gasket is damaged, you may have one of the 3
1. water leaking externally, marks in the motor somewhere, or on the ground.
2.water leaking into oil passages, mixture of oil in water, or water in the oil.
3.lcrack into the clinder will cause pressure build up into cooling system, had this once on an mq with shot head gasket, easy to tell,

Thanks mate,
With the radiator cap off and the engine running there was bubles flowing to the top of the cap, so thats why the old man said it was a cracked head.

He said it must be between .....* and .....*, because no water was leaking from tthe radiator and the engine oil wasn't foaming because of water in the oil

*( - the parts of the engine that i can't fawking remember! )

Can you confirm this ozy????? Sometimes the old man can be full of shite or completely spot on

... from a cylinder into the water jacket... however it could still be between the water and the oil; you might notice your oil level rising over time if this is the case as water sinks to the bottom.

Your next move is to run a compression test. That will tell you whether you need to pull off the head. Then you will be able to ascertain whether it is a head gasket or the head itself.

Cracked head... or blown gasket...

Where in Melbourne are you located? Know a good place that does this shit in Carrum Downs, next to Awill4x4's work... they did a major sweet job on one we saw there.

That would mean no warranty, and chances are the head is fubar. Low Compression etc, would a rebuild be out of the question or worth it? if hes planning on keeping it, if the head is off, may as well do rings and shit

Could be worth checking out

I have a TB42 for sale.. complete fan to flex plate.. few minor bits
such as oil sensors not there. Taken out of 88 auto SWB Patrol for a
Chev conversion. It's the carby version.. Had 245K on the clock.
Looks like heads have been replaced at some point. I'd only driven
with it in a few times but it always started first go, sounded in
good order, and drove well. $600..

I'm in brisbane.. contact terry@4wdlinks.com.au if you're interested or have any questions.

Jad thar problem over 12 months fixed it by tightening the headbolts then again 6 months later by swapping radiator, then took out the thermostat but eventually I had to add 5 litres of water every day and couldn't drive more than 1/2 an hour, the head got too hot cracked through into the oil gallery next, drove it for another 3 month on soupy oil, before I put a 2nd hand motor in, head was corroded beyond repair in the water jacket gasket surface on No6 cylinder, could be a casting fault.
