Mad steering wobble
Mad steering wobble
Ok so I dont know it I should post this here or in the toyota or gen tech section but its mostly a zook so here we go.
I have finly got the zook so far the its drivable on the road but ts gets a mad steering wheel shimmy so much that I have to stop the car.
my set up is 80 diffs and 80 series steering box (fitted with spacer tubes welded in the chassie) with 2" extended shackels (I know the bush are worn and think this my be my problem) and 37" tyres any one have any thoughts on what it could be. do other zooks with std diffs do this?
oh btw theres no steering dampner on it yet

type in death wobbles in search as i was showed to do
it seems to be a real common thing with zooks, dampener might help but as people say only covers up the problem,i replaced the dampener with a big one on my zook, put new tyres on and got em balanced, tightened up steering box as its sloppy as,toed it in a bit, tried heaps of adjustments in and out and then i put a new front diff in that i put a swivel hub kit etc in,wheel bearings were loose as i pulled my old diff out, tight with new diff and it hasnt done it since so i put it down to my wheel bearings
how are yours?are your tyres balanced ,how quick were u going?mine used to do it at 60,then with new tyres and dampener was 30 but it used to be so bad id have to try pull over and id lock it up to a complete stop
maybe its them big ugly diffs and you should give them to me

Chech/change/tighten up your front end bearings, bushes etc. If it still does it check what your caster is set to. When you welded the perches on did you check/set caster to be approx standard 80 series? Get some standard tyres and rims (standard 80s haha) so you are testing on a good balanced tyre. Testing on unbalances 37's will be a struggle.

I set the peachs up to to std caster for a 80 series but havent had it wheel aligned yet to check will try the 31's I havelay80n wrote:zookimal wrote:What's the castor set up as?

If your bearings and steering box are tight and the castor's good i'd check your wheel alignment - if its toeing in even slightly with the larger tyres it will wobble its head off.
Toe it out just slightly (just a few mm) and see if that fixes it, with 40's on 12" rims i wound mine out to be about 5mm toe out and slowly wound it back closer to neutral.
I think I ended up running about 2mm toe out (at the rim) and it got rid of all my wobbles.....

Youre shackles are on around the wrong way.
It's well known that death wobbles are terrible when the "S" is around the wrong way.
Sorry, couldn't resist that.
Definitely go through everything that comes up on a "death wobble" search. There's quite a few possible causes from what I can see of your setup but you will probably find it's a whole lot of little issues adding up/
Steve.
