Need Help!!!! or this is a ad for cheap rangie for sale!
Hey all
At my wits end! I have put the quadrajet on the rangie. Now it will not run. Starts and stalls 5 seconds later. It also backfires through the carbie every time. But it gets worse I have killed the second starter motor in less than a week. At the start fine then battery gets flat hook up to jumper leads keep playing and trying to start and then the starter motor gets real hot and then no start ever again no even a crank. Let it cool down still nothing. I have had this car for 3 weeks ran on straight gas when I got it but didn't run right it ran warm all the time and had overheating issues for a while there but I solved those. I need help to get this running and now.
Here's the offer there is beer and barbie on offer for anyone that would be able to spare a couple of hours and have a look at this mess for me, otherwise its for sale $2000 ONO with a second parts car included and spare motor I've had enough I just sold one nightmare Subaru L series that would never run right and walked into a bigger mess of one that won't run at all. I Would take it to mechanic but they will not touch it because its a half finished job.
So Someone PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kris,
this sounds like an electrical wiring problem. Can I suggest removing anything electrical that connects the gas system then try working out the wiring. The quadrajet is very reliable. If it has fuel the engine should run.
Are you sure its not trying to run on gas and petrol at the same time?

go pull you fuel cut off on the petrol fuel line. just put a cheap filter in for now. one you can see into to see if there is fuel in it, see if that helps. then check timing and if you have a auto choke on the carby.
with starters you should only crank the for about 30-45 sec every 5 min or you will cook them really quick
i'm putting a gas system in mine right now and had to pull the fuel solanoid off to keep it running and sort out the other problems

Thanks to everyone for your help I have it going and going well. Its running cooler than it ever has its great. Starts first turn of key on both LPG and petrol its great. The problem was the adapter plate. Got new bolts and a new thicker gasket.
I am so happy that it going.
One last question should I advance the timing anymore than the 6 Degress that it is at or not? It does seem to lack a little power.
The bonnet just now has a little extra bow in the middle but nothing to bad you can hardly notice it.
Thanks again for all the help

Hello again Bulldog,
Are you running a 2 barrell manifold with a 4 barrell adapter to fit the Quady?
If so do you have a flat spot when you put your foot down when running on petrol?
Mine was very bad when I first put the Quady on and I worked out that the Quady was set up for a much bigger/hotter engine than mine. I took it of to have it altered and fitted a little Holly 4brl but it still has a flat spot, not as bad but still there.
The carby man thinks he can get rid of it with the alterations he's doing to the Quady but I'm not yet convinced.
As far as your timing goes if I remember correctly you can set the timing for either gas or petrol but not both. Gas requires much more advance than petrol does. I just advanced it on gas until it pinged and then backed it off.
I don't know if this is the prescribed method but it worked for me,
Have fun, Glen

Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
This is basically how i used to set the timing on an old dual fuel rangie of mine many years ago. Continued to add more advance until I started to get pinging on petrol then backed it off slightly.80rangie wrote:Hello again Bulldog,

As Glen said you need more advance to run gas than petrol so doing this gives you as much advance as possible whilst still letting it run fine on petrol.
