*NOTE:- BEFORE PEOPLE FLAME ME OR ATTEMPT TO MAKE A SMART ARSE COMMENT ON WHAT I'VE SAID, THIS POST HAS TO DO WITH PERFORMANCE PETROL MOTORS, NOT DIESELS*

A BOV actually does have a purpose other than the sound produced. When the throttle body is shut, where does all the excess pressure/air volume go if you DONT have a BOV?? Straight back into the compressor wheel of the turbo....not good. Why?? Cos the turbo is still spinning at high speed, so effectively you are pushing air back into the comp. wheel blades in the opposite direction to what the comp. wheel is compressing air. In high boost situations, this has disastrous effects on the comp wheel, being known to snap the shaft IN HALF with no BOV fitted.

External wastegate = used in high boost motors. For anything under say 18psi, and internal gate is fine, BUT, this also depends on the size of the turbo.

Was pretty clear that the thread was how to fit a BOV to a diesel.

Thought I read somewhere that the 4.2 turbo diesel nissans have blow off valves and that theres problems with them leaking.
Also from memory, Mike Vine turbochargers in Capalaba runs blow off valves on his turbo kits for diesels.

And

What about volvo trucks and buses

They make a sound like a blow off valve when they change gear.

bov

If you want a good sound run a 2 or 3" exhaust system with no muffler! sounds great and makes the turbo whistle LOUD

They don't run blow off valve's they run pop off valves and what there designed to do is nothing! nah they just sit there untill the engine may have a problem where there is way too much boost produced so the pop off valve is a valve with a preloaded spring and it's designed to release the air in the manafold if it reaches an too exessive amount, and that's why you can't run high boost in a car fitted with these untill there removed EG: VL Turbo Commodore

A mate of mine has got a turbo diesel disco with the john davies turbo upgrade kit and now hes removed the mufflers and is running the standard 2 inch exhaust straight through :finger: :finger: :finger: :finger:
Sounds awsome, you can hear the turbo at idle and it sounds like the comp trucks

a bov and popoff valve are the same thing....just a bov is adjustable to suit higher pressure!!!!

Blow off valve

Post by bigtruck. »

Putting a blow off valve on diesel is a lot of stuffing around...BOV's need vacume to opperate and a diesel dosent have enough vacume to opperate one...I have seen one set up electricly to opperate of the vacume of the alternater with set stage switchs on the clutch..it worked well released presure off the turbo and gained boost real fast..was very inpressed. but what a pain in the ass to do...

My understanding has allways been that a Pop off valve as fitted to most Turbo Nissans is for when boost excedes the recomended PSI. VLs will pop around 8-10PSI usually. These let go while under boost.

A blow off valve(Vacume controlled not electric) on the other hand releases stored Boost presure from behind the throttle butterfly when engine vacume builds up. So when you back off and shut the throttle butterfly the engine gets Vacume again rather than boost and it opens the Blow off valve to stop the boost presure becoming too high on the supply side of the throttle butterfly and therfore not slowing the turbo down and allowing it to remain at a higher level of boost and minimise lag between gear changes.

For example a VL turbo Manual with 15psi boost will loose maybe 5-10psi in a gear change without a BOV where as with a BOV fitted it will usually only loose 2-5PSI.
