Feroza with a lot of km's?

Feroza with a lot of km's?
Hey all, my pursuit of purchasing a Feroza still continues. Was looking at an EL-III the other day than seemed to be in reasonable condition. Already has hella driving lights, towbar and roof racks which is a bonus, however it also has 300,000km's on it. Has a good service history, and I believe the gearbox and transfer case have been replaced, but I need to check this.
What sort of problems would you get on a feroza with this many km's on it? Due for an engine rebuild? Whats the typical damage for that?
Have looked at 4 or 5 rigs this week, and I tell you it's buyer beware out there. Oil leaks, petrol tank leaks etc etc etc. Pays to have an inspection thats for sure.

A Jap import engine would probably be cheaper than a rebuild (but more of a gamble)- Croz put one into his Feroza when his old engine died. They usually come with some sort of warranty.
Other things that could need replacing on that high km Feroza would include shock absorbers, diffs???, brake discs and wheel bearings. How long ago was the gearbox done- it could be due for it's second!
It would be worth checking the engine out closely too- compression test etc.

Thanks for the info. I went and had a look at the car this morning. The "work" done on the gearbox/transfer case turned out just to be a fluid change. Had the bearings and repacked and timing belt changed about 5000km ago, but with no evidence of any real work done of the engine or gearbox I'm not ready to risk it.
The search continues.........
I did see one the other day with a snorkel....

Have you taken it for a drive at all? Try redlining it in second gear and listen for noises coming from the gearbox- that's when mine makes the most noise and probably a good indicator of it's condition. Shifting on cold mornings (hard to do this time of year!) just after starting from a cold into second and third gear is also a good test.

Doates,
My Feroza (for sale) has 336,000 kms. An '89 DX, it has had the head reconditioned with new valves etc, and gearbox recon, alt, water pump (x2), hubs, you name it.
The thing runs like a f***en dream. Although, I suspect the engine got a rebuild before I bought it (181,000 kms / 4 years ago), but still the car is in great condition.
I would think a 4 cylinder petrol feroza with over 300,000kms on it would have been repaired reasonably recently, so you'll probably find, if its running well, not blowing smoke, it's a good buy. Dotn want to blow my own horn, but I know mine is a good car, and would a good buy at $4000, with the extras.
Cheers

Hey Doates, do you have pic of this car? I`m looking for a roof rack, but can`t find anything I really like. Have been browsing the http://www.4by4connection.com/ -site in order to get some ideas, but nothing cool so far.
Does any of you guys have a suggestion?

Where abouts in Australia are you? I live on the sunshine coast and there is a really nice for sale along the road I drive all the time I think they want around $14,000.00 for it. All I can say is don't give up the perfect car is out there somewhere, took me a while to find my car but I am happy I persisted in looking

300k is too much. i got my '93 with 60k on it 18mths ago. Keep looking.
Ferozas are such that many have only been used in the suburbs an have no off road kms and very low kms to boot, much like some sierras, pajeros, disco's, pathies, wranglers etc and unlike defenders, bundies, hilux, shorty patrols etc.etc. take our time.

Hey Jools, here is a link to the one for sale.

It has rola roof racks on it, which I like. They seem to be a lower profile than others on the market.
I think I may have to save a bit more and maybe just look at getting a widetrack. There was a nice one in the trading post the other day with 150km on the clock selling for 8k.
