Blown Turbo or is it terminal ?

Post by pongo »

I have a old 3.3 TD nissan patrol. has been sitting around for about 6 months or so.

I cranked her up the other day and she is blowing smoke. Didn't when i bought her. Seems to have strong compression and car has about 240k on the clock.

There is minimal blow-by also

When started it blows a little but when you give it heaps it bellows out and doesnt get any better.

It has a blue with whitish tinge when you first give it full throttle then settles down to a std blue smoke screen.

there is almost none at idle or low rpm but the higher the rpm the worse it gets obviously.

Im thinking turbo, but have no experience with turbos. I do have a same model patrol which im driving now so could easilly do an engine/box swap but am trying to keep the old POS on the road as long as possible

Opinions? Suggestions? Thanks

Probably turbo seals. Does it get smokier the hotter the exhaust gets?

Take the dump pipe off - see if there is oil inside.

You can get seal kits for most turbos. Not too hard to do diy.

Probably better off hunting down a second hand unit for $50. OR get a better unit if you plan on keeping the car.
