bodyswap and engineering help in qld.

Post by mud4b »

ok im pretty sure this is in the right section.

i have a 05 navara str duelcab and i want to put the body onto a gq chassis. it is a body swap. i have been trying to get in contact with graham prestly and ass (D.o.t approved and preferred engineer here on the sunshine coast) but he never picks up the phone or returns my calls.

now i know a body swap can be legal in qld if approved, but my navara is a repairable writeoff and the gq chassis is not, so im trying to find out if it can be registered after engineering and roadworthy or if it wont as it does need a inspection as a repairable writeoff and will not pass as it has been modified...

can anyone suggest a engineer or whoever takes care of this side of things in qld, im on the sunshine coast but will travel if needed..

Mate graham is not looking for more projects as far as I am aware.

I got the impression mine is a 'favour' as we have built the 7.

he has a day job now and finishes work at 5 maybe try calling hime after working hours, and see if you are lucky.

Alan marburg works northside of brisbane now, you will need to plan a few weeks in advance to see him.
I have graham's mob, and alan's numbers at work I'll pm them tomorrow

cheers bru

if your GQ is a Stat write off forget it. You can do a body swap easily, (if your chassis is not stat write off) it will just be registered as a rebodied GQ. If you have all the running gear head off to a wreckers and buy a non stat chassis. Should only be around the $300 mark for a bare chassis. Drop all your running gear in it, change your cab mounts (and all your small things like steering, wiring, gearbox tunnel etc) and your away.
I've had my engineer around a couple of weeks ago as I'm shortening a 80 series chassis to put my Fj40 Body on. Mine will be registered as a rebodied 80. No drama.
My engineer is Phil Scott, he is based at home in Grafton (actually just west) I know he travels fair distances for blokes with hot rods etc. He is very switched on and knows his stuff. Charges around the 600 mark, 300 up front deposit for initial consultation, which incl. meets and help along the way with balance to be paid on cert.
His numbers are 0412 339 242 0266477558 and email is philscotauto@bigpond.com

Hope this helps.

hi troy.
i have the whole rolling chassis here from a gq it is not a stat or repairable writeoff so it should be fine, the navara is a repairable writeoff though (the body is not bad but the chassis is stuffed, so hopefully it does not worry it, do you know how the vin plates go though on the body or since it will be classed as a rebodied gq are they obsolete now? cheers for the help as i was about to sell the whole navara, i will send a e-mail to phil. good luck with your 40 bud it sounds great.

Hey Mark,
I'm not sure on the Vin Plates off the cab. As far as I know everything is based on the chassis number.. The vin plate though does give trim type and colour, cab colour (not that that matters) plus all the ADR numbers. EG 1245689, these are all the codes for seatbelts, brakes blah blah. I cant remember what each number stands for now but Phil can rattle them off to you one by one. So I'm not sure if you would take the one of the GQ and stick on the fire wall of the navara for all those codes or just leave em off?? Good point though as I'll have to ask Phil the same q' for mine. But he never mentioned to grab those when I went to by my 80 chassis..?
Good Luck, keep us posted.

LOL this brings back memories I had so much drama when doing a body swap I used a written off defender chassis and my old existing cab you can use a written off vehicle as spare parts as the chassis was fine but however i did have to get a surregant vin number stamped onto the chassis good luck

Perhaps polite articulate PM traffic would be the preferable way to resolve some issues rather than open forum sparring.

Meaning can you help or put me onto someone that can since you are in the know and have been through this, not just say "goodluck"

Tried Phil Harris from Carpliance south of Brisbane.... he engineered the XC/60 series combo for us a year or so back...

be careful with your donor... you'll have to meet the regs for it, for example ours was registered as a 60 series l'cruiser... otherwise tyres would have been an issue.

an 80 series donor may require air bags etc...

one thing i should add here is body swap won't be a modification soon - it will be an icv. From the mouth of graham.

He must love you man i still cant even talk to him let alone get a answer..
i called the dreaded DOT and got another person, Lennard from harvey bay area, still waiting to hear from him.

the codes are apparently k3 and l01 for what i want to do.. They seem to think i will have no problem getting it done and approved, have to get somewhere soon i fugure or ill sell the bloody thing..

Hey not sure whether or not he can do those particular codes, but give Ross Allen From Ross Allen Trucks in Beerwah a call on 54919255. I worked there for 8 years and qutie often had guys coming in with wagon to ute conversions etc which he blue plated. Worth talking to him about it, anyway.
If that doesn't work there is also a guy called Garry Dance who from memory runs a mobile business blue plating/engineering. haven't got his number sorry but shouldn't be too hard to track down.

still don't think you need an engineer. I think it is a blue plate affair.

There are a few servo's in brisbane that are able to cover the whole range of plates, try them. Can't be of more help as I cannot remember which one - they did my ute conversion.

G'day Mud4B and guys.

I love the idea of a D21 Dual cab on a GQ body. I am sure it can be engineered as a ICV for example like rhino buggies. http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au

I would love to see the finish product and how much body lift you need to fit the engine bay over the engine. Best of luck :-)

Thanks, Cav :-)

it is a mod plate for a body swap. ICV means the vehicle cant be the same as any currently available (not look like a nav on a patrol chassis) the chassis or the body has to be individually constructed i.e. Bru's buggy. however.. a body swap on the other hand or a chassis swap, whichever way you want to call it is just a blueplate. this is info told to me by an engineer (phil from carpliance) and a mod plater (john something from brendale) mark, check with a modplater first.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
