radiators, turbo's & i/c

Post by derangedrover »

Questions for Nissan oficionados.

What year did the factory start putting 3 core radiators in 4.2d GQ's? Will it replace a factory 2 core with no mods to fan/shroud/hoses etc? No I dont want an aluminium or custom rad of any sort, especially not from Aussie Desert Cooler. Anyone bought a three core from Nissan or rad shop without having to give them yours and have it modded? $?

Anyone running a top mount intercooler on an early gq/pre 88? Where did you get it and whos turbo are you running? DTS said their top mount wont work on an 88 but the dealer couldn't tell me why.

Turbo 4.2d guys, anyone running with no muffler? Any droning/excessive noise probs?

Ive heard people talking about in cab adjustable boost on their diesel rigs, how is the fuel controlled in these cases? ie if you wind up the boost and not the fuel wont it just increase the intake temp and no more go?

Opinions on DTS turbo set-ups? Im looking for a drive in/out service with someone I can trust, good result, good price, good warranty. Currently leaning toward a DTS set-up from a mob in Townsville.

Cheers

1) DTS System is excellent would go it myself next tiem
2) AWILL4x4 is making a custom top mount intercooler for a nice, handsome bloke at the moment for his TD42T... USes the DTS Mounting kit, and airbox
3) running no muffler at the moment, its noisey, drones heaps, so going to change it soon, might go 3in system instead. currently 2/1/2 system.

Bogged,

What are you going to do about the sealing skirt being too short from the bonnett to ic?

Whats Awill making for you (how big etc) and how much? Got his phone number?

What did DTS charge you for the kit without cooler and how comprehensive is it?

What turbo are you running and does it mount in the same position as the DTS setup? Does the DTS airbox run the stock Nissan filter?

Have you got a heameroid on your turbo setup? How much boost are you running?

Cmon guys, theres gotta be more info here than what bogged looks like....

Cheers

Not sure what you mean, the IC is the same as a DTS one, but larger volume, using a GU bonnet scoop setup. There is one setup on a GU not far from me. The scoop sits in same place as 3.0 GU.

Whats Awill making for you (how big etc) and how much? Got his phone number?

Size etc, top secret.. Price is even more secret, he aint told me yet, I will soil myself later.

D & F Racing Products

Try to call at lunchtime, they are fairly busy at the moment, they make sprint car chassis and shit like that.

Having got it yet, but when I mailed them they said $250, this was bout 12 mths ago though :( Will do it again in few days. comes with everything bar the ICooler itself.

Denco Turbo system www.dencodiesel.com and its in a diff spot to all others. The airbox comes with the DTS kit. Wouldnt go with Denco again, I like the DTS, but the price diff at the time swayed me, foolish Cookie I am.

Have you got a heameroid on your turbo setup? How much boost are you running?

Nope, no fuel aneroid. One bloke took his to denco to get sorted out, they told him to remove the fuel aneroid! NFI why, there was an explanination but too long winded. Running currently 11psi

Cmon guys, theres gotta be more info here than what bogged looks like....

I am god. www.are.com.au for info on turbos.

Bogged,

Spoke to DTS again today about why they said their top mount wouldnt work on an GQ. They said theirs was setup on a GU and their motor is closer to the bonnett, hence their sealing skirt between the scoop and the intercooler would be too short on a GQ, ~1". Add a bodylift and the situation gets worse.

Are you planning on running a fan on the intercooler?

I'll call Andrew tommorow and see what he says.

Darryl, the I/cooler I'm building is the same external size as the DTS one (300mm X300mm) but instead of approx 40mm thick it's a 55mm thick ADRAD core. I've used a number of different cores but these ADRAD I/cooler cores are really nice and the strongest cores I've seen. Trouble is, like all core manufacturers they are custom builds so aren't cheap.
I had the core built 600 X 300 then cut it in half between the tubes (perfectly safe in this direction) so I ended up with 2 cores.
I bought the rubber seal from DTS and my a@#$hole still hurts from being reamed so hard. (It would be interesting to see how much a genuine seal would cost either from Nissan or from the wreckers ) I don't see the seal being any problem as I'll just build an extra alloy ring and attach it to the scoop mounting bracket to get it to the right height if I have to.
The scoop sits central to the bonnet not offset like the factory one. I've got the stainless steel sheet to build the shroud around the I/cooler to direct airflow and that will be my next job.
The inlet and outlet tanks are fabricated and fully welded to the core the outlet tube is in position and welded. I've left the inlet off until fitting and will build to suit the turbo.
Unfortunately I don't have a digicam so am unable to post any pics but it's coming up REALLY nice :) (Bruce, get in and bring you digicam with you :D )
The DTS I/coolers aren't built to run a fan as they have a stainless steel shroud around the base directing air through the scoop and I/cooler then directing it backwards and downwards towards the transmission tunnel. (VERY CLEVER  ) It may be possible to run one above the I/cooler but it would probably effect airflow through the scoop when not needed.
No prices as yet as it's all R&D at the moment.
I haven't got a clue as to the airbox arrangement yet but the Denco one on Bruce's almost certainly won't fit, at least not in its present location.
Maybe I'll just duct straight from snorkel to the turbo inlet with no filter  I'm sure Bruce will never notice
Regards Andrew.

Andrew,

Sounds interesting! What are you using for tanks? Fabbing them up out of sheet?

GET PICS BOGGED

Daryl, yes the intecooler tanks are fabricated using sheet. On all my intercooler fabricated tanks I only use 3mm aluminium sheet the reason is that I've seen the results of high boost pressure on thin sheet tanks where the constant pulsing of on/off boost can lead to tank failure. (Not mine though :) )

there is an off the shelf housing available to suit a k&N pod filter type setup. 3" flex in, 3" flex out, mount it wherever you desire...

I think it is a K&N product, so any of their usual resellers should have it in their catalogues?
