1.6 16v temp sender to sierra dash

Post by Bron5on »

Hey guys, did some searching but didn't quite find the answer i wanted. Just needed to know if the 1.6 16v and g13 temp senders return the same readings. Have just finished my 1.6 conversion (running the the sierra temp guage off 1.6 temp sender) and the temp guage doesn't even make it to 1/4, even when driving in town with thermo fan switched off. Could it be the thermostat is stuck open?? Or should i run the sierra temp sender? The weather hasn't been all that warm but surely the temp should be higher than this? I will probably go aftermarket guage eventually but for the time being just standard. any ideas much appreciated!
Cheers!

i also run a mechanical gauge on the dash and much more responce out of it as i was also having issues with my gauge at the start.

what fan/shroud/radiator are u running?

i am running in mine stock cleaned out rad, 16v viscous fan and sierra shroud.

At present it's running an ally jimny radiator, which i also used with the original 1.3 when my old radiator gave up the ghost. No engine fan as the radiator is mounted slightly off centre causing fan to foul on the top hose. I have a push fan mounted to front of radiator (no shroud) which is temporarily running off a switch on the dash. It's just not running as warm as it used to. Granted the 1.6 doesn't have to work nearly as hard as the old 1.3 used to and until next week there is no bumper so heaps of airflow. Have a brand spankers arb bar and hella 4000's to go on which will block the air flow considerably. I might have to reconsider my radiator mounts (not the best job but it works) and put the engine fan back on at some stage. Current fan is a super cheap (calibre) job i'm using while i'm testing the new engine.

it does sound about right but you wont know till u use another gauge to test.

did the gauge work ok before with 1.3?

not 100% sure but can u swap the temp sender out to the 1.3 style to test?

i had to replace my 1.3 sender and after i did the gauge always read lower than what it was before. i believe there are a couple different sierra ones.

It appeared to work fine before the engine swap. I will swap out the senders and see how it goes. Might get a new thermostat while i'm at it. If that isn't the answer at least i'll have a spare! Cheers!

Mine has same same set up G16B Vit sensor, fan and radiator inc shroud with Sierra gauge and has always run at half temp. I do have an oil cooler (for power steer) and winch in front so that may affect it.

Ok, so I swapped out the 2 sensors (now running 1.3 sensor in 1.6) and it makes a huge difference. Temp gauge on dash now hovers around 1/3 where as previously it was only edging a couple of mm above the bottom line. So either the senders are different or the vit one was faulty. The main concern is that I drove it around town with the fan switched off thinking it was ok. God knows how hot it was actually getting! Here's hoping she's all good!
