253 into bundy..

Post by robbie »

yay, or nei?

I have worked out a few prices.. could do it quite cheaply & its a nice power increase over the stock 22R..

anyone put a 253 in a lux, or bundy? had any problems along the conversion etc?

I had a 253 orignally in my 4runner when I bought it, I now have 5.0l efi v8. The 253 was crap.

I would never put a carb motor in any vehicle, I prefer EFI. Runs at any angle, start first time much nicer all round. Not saying that you can't get a carb motor running sweet, but I have had better luck with EFI.

Now if I was you I would look at a toyota straight six eg 7m, etc I think you might get away with out buying a gear box adapter. Not sure do a search because a lot has been discussed.

I have a 253 in the shorty40 and now the carby and timing issues are sorted it runs sweet. Granted, its not as 'nice' as EFI but it does the hard stuff ;)

It is not a top end performer but I love the grunt it has

BTW - I am running an edelbrock performer manifold, Q-Jet and electronic dizzy ;)

Edit - plus they are cheap as chips

I reckon the 253 is a great choice. They are a dime a dozen and they produce the right amount of power in the right rev range. You can get around the carby problems by going straight gas. A 308 puts a lot more stress on the driveline. Sure, it's fun having all that power on sand dunes or draging your mates on the street, but out in the sticks I think a 308 is a slight overkill.
The other great thing that comes with a 253 is that V8 sound!!!
Of course I am biassed since owning 2 253s (in Commondores )

Don't underestimate the cost of a conversion. I converted a VB commodore from 202 to 253. I got the motor cheap but spent hundreds on bell housings, clutches, a longer input shaft to gearbox, 3 core radiator, engine mounts, exhaust, pedals, radiator shrouds, carbie, tailshaft, yoke...

Next time I'd be tempted to get all the bits of a donor car.

thanks for the info guys.. I pretty much budgeted for all those parts you listed glenxr650..

whats a straight gas setup worth?

To comply with Australian emission laws the new engine must have been manufactured the same year or later than the vehicle. The engine must also have all of the emission components connected, including the catalytic converter. The engine must also be run on unleaded fuel or LPG.

Just found that off Marks4WD site.. no 253 was built in 86 onwards, so it looks like if I went the 253 route, it would definately need to be on straight gas..

complete underbonnet kit for a carb engine with all lines, fittings, fill point etc runs around 800-900. add the price of whatever tank you want to run to that...

If you NEED the V8 sound then look at the 1UZ otherwise the best bang for buck is the M Series Toy donks !!

I got a 3 yr old sytem from the wreckers for $300 that I fitted into a statseman. I installed it myself, then took it to a gas installer who cleaned the converter, checked the installation and certified it for $200.

It needs that all important compliance plate to be legal.

Im goin against my chev grain here... but a 3.9 Rover engine is quite easily bored/stroked out to 4.2 and is fuel injected...

Dunno about conversion kits of the sort however.

How bout the VK Black engine... fuel injected 202 i think.. all it needs is a big sports exhaust and could sound like a V8.

You should be able to get the head modified for fuel injection if u were keen for the 253, runing an aftermarket coputer and sensors...

Dan.

If you have to go the Gas route then other options will be cheaper. You could probably do a commy v6 efi conversion

I wouldnt go an injected 202, all the ones I have driven use way too much fuel compared to thier power.

An efi 253 is a fairly easy job, only as hard as adding efi to a 308 and that has been done plenty of times, and if you ever get bored with the power almost all the bits you put on the 253 will transfer to a 308 (or you could bore and stroke the 253 to 310)

a 350 is smaller in size than a 253/308 so it will tuck inbetween the guards easier. block may fit but you need exhaust pipes remember.

get a stock 350 and it will last longer than a hot 253. and put out more usable torque.

I wouldnt say an efi 253 would be a fairly easy job, it would also be very costly, robbie was chasing a cheap conversion. A better proposition if efi was necessary would be to buy a fuel injected 304 holden motor, cheaper and easier.

I think it is pretty bloody hard to achieve a cheap conversion with good power and fuel economy. If you want just cheap power go for the carby 350 chev, if you want power and economy i would go for a 1UZFE, or a 1JZGTE like me

why do you wanna run straight gas robbie? Economy? or to fit

I am of the understanding, correct me if i am wrong however that petrol is 'supposed' to be run through your engine weekly to lubricate carbies etc.

Also, gotta hate cold mornings on gas, we do live in melbourne remember dude.

interesting ideas..

why straight gas? its easier to engineer I guess..

304 injected sounds like a plan.. what year were they produced? I need a motor from an 86 onwords to comply with engineering..

so I guess a 304 out of a VL series 2 or so? were they carbied or injected in the VLs?

The first injected holden v8s where in VN's (unless your extremely lucky and happen to find one of the rare VL injected v8's but even then it will cost alot)

I havent looked for an injected v8 for a while but if you can get hold of a cheap carby version that fits your requirments you can get all the efi gear needed for under $1500 (it will require some mechanical no how to get it all together)

Carby 304 can be found in late VK commodores and all VL's. However these engines have NOTHING in common with VN onward injected 304's except for their capacity, they are nearly identical to 308's except for capacity. It is possible to fit EFI 304 injection gear to carb 304/308, but to do so you will need to adapt the efi 304 heads to the carb block and fit an efi cam, it can be done but is costly. Machining, heads, cam, timing gear, manifold, injectors etc. will cost alot more than $1500. The cost will be the same as just buying an injected 304 to begin with.

Having said all that i would most definitely choose a 1UZFE over an injected holden motor. Cheaper, stronger, lighter, more powerful, more emission friendly and made by Toyota :)

Guys, this all sounds well and good, and I really like the idea of keeping it all toyota...

My Middy FJ73 has just had the roof permanently removed, roll bars added and a coat of toyota blue off the rav4's and echos...

I can pick up a EFI 304 from a VR Senator that has chiptorque chip and cam, I can then go and get almost every other bit i need from Marks 4WD Adaptors...

With the 1UZFE, is there any gearbox adaptors for them to bolt upto the standard 5 speed Cruiser box...

I would love to keep it all toyota rather than (don't get me wrong, they are nice swaps) Holden or Chev...

I searched for 1UZFE on Google and it came up with Deons Conversion, good read if you wanna hear about a shite load of hassles...

Main parts needed are the Box adaptors, deciding whether to run manual or auto (I would pick Manual), Clutches and mounts, then having someone wire it all in...

Also what would you expect to pay for one of these engines...?

Lets work this out together and we might have a boat load of Toyota's running around with 1UZFE's lurking under the bonnets...

The only Landcruiser gearbox i know that you can get a bellhousing for is the R151 or R150 from dellow. I will check the catelogue when i get home to see if they make bellhousings for other Landcruiser boxes yet.

I think it is possible for anyone with limited autoelectrical knowledge i.e. knows what positive and earth is, to wire up the engine.

Going price is around $2000 for auto, loom and computer.

Mark's probably should be looking into developing a conversion package for these engines. ;) ;)

Oh yeah, I have heard of someone in Malaysia i think putting a 1UZ into a 40 series i think.
