My 1990 2H diesel troopy runs great but has started to blow smoke on deceleration, ie: when say in 4th gear coming down a hill etc and you take your foot off the accelerator a reasonable amount of what appears to be blueish smoke appears in the rear window, it dissapears when you accelerate again.
Any thoughts on its cause, i thought valve stem seals as i've had similar in petrol motors, but don't know anything much about diesels, do they even have stem seals?
Dave

2H diesel smoke on deceleration, does it have valve seals?

you can do them in car you just have to be very carfull what i do is to pull out the glowplugs and slowly turn the motor over with the rockers off just put your finger on the glowplug hole and just as it starts to suck your finger in rather than repel it that cylinder is on top dead centre. ok the next thing to do is to put a small amount of oil in the cylinder and let it sit for a minute this helps the piston rings hold against the bore using a old glowplug machine the inside of the plug out to accept a pressure fitting and fit to cylinder put around 5-10psi in that cylinder. once done carfully remove the valve collets and spring. i use 2 screw drivers and a bit of wire if the appropriate tool is available from that point the seal can be removed and the new one fitted. I must say if you havent done this before your better off gettin somebody to do it you only have to drop one valve and you have to pull the head off. however its a lot cheaper if you can do it this way.
Thanks for the info
Ok, so it is possible to do, but sounds a bit beyond my level as i'd hate to cause more damage, so would have to find someone in melbourne to fix for me, assuming it is the problem.
I think i'll need to take it to an "expert" for a professional diagnosis as i'm only guessing what's wrong with it
Ant tips on good diesel shops/mechanics in melbourne's north? It's probably due for injectors and pump reco while it's at it.

1990 and has a 2h fitted , are you sure , should have a 1hz for that year model .
I would personally get the head pulled and checked for cracks etc at the same time .
And as for the pump and injectors , the pump will cost around $1500 + to rebuild and if working fine now why fix it , just get the injectors mabey replaced or cleaned and adjust everthing .

Yeah it's definitely a 2H, last of the series to get one, but a 1HZ woulda been nice but outta my price range.
My concern with doing the head is the bottom end will then let go, it's done 396000klm but runs really sweet, and if the head comes off then i'd be more inclined to go a full rebuild but it starts getting expensive
