Caliper Grinding????
Caliper Grinding????
well picked up the mongrels from gonads at xrcc today, went to put em on tonight to see where they're gonna rub, but the front wont go on. it is fouling the caliper because the centre of the rim is flat, unlike a normal steel rim, that bends out towards the edge.
soooooo, i need to take some meat off the edge of the caliper, and probably get the rims machined down a bit to clear the caliper. has anyone ever had to do this to a vit or sierra?

No Idea wrote:get some rim spacers
there are some available that only space the rim 10mm and still use the existing studs
i'd like to do that, but the centre of the rim is made out of 12.5mm steel, so there is already not much thread sticking through on the studs, if i put a spacer in, there will be no thread showing through

any idea how much that'd set me back nam?
if its anymore than $100 for the two, its probably easier to just buy 2 normal steel rims
a local place does them for $50 a rim with a decent paint job too. i'm sure you can find a wheel works place that will do the same.

I had the exact same problem with my 2001 Grand Vitara... rather sad... the calipers actually touched the spoke so getting a bigger offset rim wouldn't exactly help unless there was a huge angle on the spokes from the centre out.
Grinding means you'll have to take away at least 1cm. I read an article where the Toyota guys (official Toyota workshops) sometimes actually grind Landcruiser calipers because of the same problem when fitting certain rims so I guess it won't kill ya... and it's cheaper than getting new centres... alternative could be wheel spacers I guess...

This is kinda interesting as a set of 32" mongrels i have seen were taller than my 34" swampers are... and that would make them about 33 and a bit inches tall i think.

That is from the top of the caliper not the side and they are grinding away about quarter of a centimeter to allow 16 inch rims (from memory) on onto the prado that comes with 17's ..
There is noo way I would grind 10mm off any part of the brake caliper .. IMHO I would in order of preferance
1. change the rims entirely
2. Get the centres swapped
3. run wheel spacers

Ditto on this... playing with brakes sounds like a bit of trouble to me considering how cheap and simple changing to different rims would be.
Or, if anything perhaps this is a good reason to change your front diff over to being something like a sierra widetrack or something then the brakes should clear the rims

Will have to revise the list ... Option one .. SAS ..
Option two new rims

Might have to make that option 2 also - thought of an easier option... buy a sierra - those rims should fit one
1. buy a sierra
2. sas
3. new rims
4. re-centre rims
5. rim spacers

i'd have to gain 6mm of clearance somewhere, was thinking a combo of grinding tthe caliper and getting the rims lathed down, but its easier and cheaper to just buy new rims.
btw, sat the mongrels next to a set of 33in bfg muds, and they were about 1/2 in smaller, and almost identical in height to a set of 33in hankook all terrains
and i'd love to sas it, anyone wanna donate parts and/or another car for me to get around with while the vit is off the road

I think the issue with caliper clearance is basically the rims need to go.
Maybe swap them onto your existing 7 inch rims and sell the 30"s off on the Fanta rims...
lol @ fanta rims. i'm not gonna run these on the road, so i need to keep the 30's

Easiest way is just to get some new rims aant.
What offset works best on Vits with 31/32?
FYI, I measured my Mongrels when they were new at exactly 31".
Exactly 31" is slightly larger than a normal 31" tyre (about 30.6-30.7")
Not quite a 32" but bigger than a 31"
If you notice they should be a 32x10.5x15"..... because they're based on a 31x10.5x15" carcass (the most common size for them to get a heap to produce). This is good for those with 7" rims.
I'll wait and see how antt goes with his, versus how I go with the Geolanders.
Lucky antt has EFI so he can probably turn them at 110kph.....
As far as offset goes, I used -25mm on 8" wide rims on my 88 Vitara SWB. I think probably -13mm on 8" or -25mm on 7" would have been better as far as wheel clearance at the front - using 2" Kings Springs and 35mm body lift.
With 2" body lift I'd say there would be less of a problem. I guess it depends on how much metal you wanna bash/chop
Later models and LWB have a few changes that means clearance is a problem at different points so don't take it as gospel. As to the person who reckoned that the were running 32"s with 2" suspension and no body lift.... I'd love to take a tape measure to those tyres....
As far as the 33" BFG's go - BFG's over 31" seem to be massively overstated to sound sexy... a 35" BFG mud is really about 33", so a 33" being about 32" in real terms sounds about right.
It's like some tyres are measured in p3nis size rather than in real sizes.

lol, i doubt i'm gonna be able to turn em
had em next to a 33in radial claw this arvo, and it was exactly an inch smaller. so i dunno how claws are measured
how do ya measure backspacing? i betta work it out tto see what'll work best on the front
