Cutting 4Runner guards

Post by basketcase »

Want to cut the front and rear guards on my 4runner. Going to run 34 JT2's. I know is not necessary for these size tyres but I put some decent panel damage into a rear guard and I thought this would be an easy way round getting it fixed.

So any tips would be great.

I got mine done by a panel beater. I did both front and rear and also got the front floor tubbed to fit the 37's. I now have plenty of room for the 37's.

It is a lot of work as the rear inner pannel need to be re-made.

here are some pics of the rear

If you are going to get the guards cut I would also tub the front floor to fit bigger tyres when you decide to go that way.

Also with the front I only cut the rear part of the guard

A panel beater I spoke to reckons I wont be able to cut my front guards and weld a lip back on them without warping the shit out of the whole guard. I said but heaps of people have done it. I dunno.
Might be time for me to find a different panel beater  .

This guy did not weld a lip on. He rolled the lip after cutting the guard. This guy is old school.

I cut 2" out of my front guards and folded the lip back on with a pair of Pliers and a hammer and dolly.

Thanks for that. Going to see a couple of panel beaters on monday about the rear. Might do the front myself. Don't want to stuff with the double skin and plus I have to get the panel damaged fixed.

I am pretty sure you reshape it and tack weld it back to the outer skin.

For all four guards I have been quoted anywhere between $700 and $2000.

I have been quoted $1000 - $5000. That is for cutting all guards and tubbing the rear and front wheel wells.
