Picking up our new 4-bee next week (GU Patrol) and the only thing its lacking is a winch
it already has a decent bull bar on it
any suggestions or advice? I haven't bought one for a long time

First and foremost, is the bar a winch bar? If not you need to get yourself a compatible winch bar.
I am going to assume you won't be doing comp work so a low mount winch will be fine.
There are literally hundreds of threads on winches here at OL. Do a search and start reading.
I'll give you a head start.

The comparo's that I read (4x4 Australia a couple of years ago and 4wd Action recently), the premier winch kicked butt all over the place with both real world winching, a test bed comparo AND, importantly, current draw. It won BOTH comparo's.
It even beat the Warn!!
If I feel the need to buy a winch, that's the one I'll be buying!!

the question you need to ask is, Is the premier 6 times better the a t-max and is the price justified.joeblow wrote:yes.....and we all want to break winches..........hang on....no we don't........ .............and they will break..........brad-chevlux wrote:-3joeblow wrote:x2......Struth wrote:The Premier winch won the recent comparo and would seem like a good buy.

personly. I'd rather buy two or three $500 winches and get the same life as you would with one $3000+ winch.

you might change your mind when you get stuck and your winch fails.
don't be a tight arse......buy high quality to start with.
yeh im with you whats the point of buying a winch when you cant rely on it all of the time, how often are you gonna be carrying the second winch in ur 4by when the first one burns out?mule75 wrote:brad-chevlux wrote:joeblow wrote:yes.....and we all want to break winches..........hang on....no we don't........ .............and they will break..........brad-chevlux wrote:-3joeblow wrote: x2......

If your winch is your only recovery gear, you deserve to be stuck.

Theres one place selling them for $30 + shipping. Posted it up ages ago.. Why not buy one of them?

i agree but i'm not going to risk my whole car and have to leave it down in a valley or something just because i wanted to save a grand by having a crappy winch instead of just buying right to start with
cheap winches are in the same category as mongrels, ebay electric superchargers and chinese lockers

Why would you be leaving your car somewhere?
winches are juts a lazy mans way of getting out. Not saying they are bad thing to have, i'm buying one for my patrol.
We have pulled my patrol from bogged up to the chassis in slop with out needing a bar mounted winch, done countless other recoveries with no bar mounted winches.
Sure it takes longer and is damn hard work, but you don't need to leave your car anywhere.
you should always have back up recovery gear anyway, so IF it does fail, you can hand winch or do what ever els is needed

premier is about $1400 - 1500
its about the cheapest premium quality winch
there are other good ones cheaper but if I owned a 4by as heavy as a patrol Id be buy a top quality winch.
I own a zook and so run a chinese 6000lb one and it does even know there is a zook attached

What about second hand. I bought a warn high mount, fitted a new warn 6hp motor, titan solinoid and some high amp wire. Even after buying plasma rope will have cost me less than a new high mount winch.
Second hand warn winchs can be bought for $500-$1000 fairly regularly on ebay.

Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

How many people on here have actually broken a Tmax? In zook sizes Tmax are actually stronger an have a more powerful motor than the Warn for half the price.
And for every person that replies saying they have broken a Tmax there will be ten people that have broken a warn, they sell more and they are not infallable so they DO break. I saw a brand new never used in anger warn low mount on a GU twist itself to bits trying to winch a GQ up a hill and the GU wasn't even ancored to a tree. Every brand has breakages, the important thing is which break more often and if you can factor that into the price. That considered Tmax and tigerz11 seem to be shining above the rest.

we don't play in slop.....i'd like to see you get out of a high country track like abbots in the wet with no winch or even a crappy one. thats why you're not allowed down there anymore. we've seen cars left down there for dead.
quite often go wheeling with one car. It doesn't have a winch. only once have i made a phone call to get help. but only because it was getting dark and raining and water level was raising fast. i could have gotten out with help and with out a winch.KYSI wrote:what if your wheeling by yourself?brad-chevlux wrote:mule75 wrote: i agree but i'm not going to risk my whole car and have to leave it down in a valley or something just because i wanted to save a grand by having a crappy winch instead of just buying right to start with
