4Runner Roof Strength

Post by 4runnerJonno »

G'day,
I have an 84 4runner with the standard fiberglass canopy and a roof rack cage that mounts onto the top of the canopy at the rear and onto the gutter mounts at the front and I wanted to build a lightweight roof top tent to put up there.

What sort of weights have people carried on their 4runner roof's and how do they stand up to it? Anyone slept up there?

Cheers,
Jon

What ever you do don't fix it to your fiberglass roof...
take off your existing roof rack and make a full cage from the bumper to support the tent..
Just a note old fiberglass does not like to be screwed with.... cracks up big time...
Just want to play...........

A mate of mine had one of these with a roof rack bolted through the fibreglass canopy, he carried whitewater kayaks up there 4 at a time, 20kg each = 80kg, no problems, even off road.

Depends on the weight of your tent.

You could also build an internal steel support much like the Flexiglass Canopies seen on thousands of tradies utes.
