Pipe bender question
Hi Guys,
Just after some advice on pipe benders. Have been looking into it a bit, and the JD Squared ratcheting one looks to be my kind of thing, as i only want it for a bit of weekend work. but the $750 for it then another $700 for the 2" dies seems a bit steep when you compare it to the hare and forbes bottle jack style ones (about$235) which come with a range of dies 1/2" to 2". has anyone got one of the cheap ones and if so how do they run? Recommended or should i keep saving for a decent one?[/url]

Well mate i'd go with the old saying you only get what you pay for. a mate of mine has the botttle jack type and it worked ok for my sliders, but he and i are looking at going 1/2's in a jd bender for making tube tray's etc you will just get more accurate bends and they will be mandrell bends instead of creases on tighter angle

All but the last link were found on the first page of results after typing "bender" into the search engine. it would also help if you let us know your budget, your experience, and what you plan on using it for.
As has been written a billion times before, a cheap bender and a good die will handle 90% of anything you want to make for your 4wd.

Sorry mate, didn't even realise there was a search function until you just told me, just joined up yesterday. boilermaker by trade, but got out of the game 6 mths ago. just want it to fab up some protection for my feroza, so if the cheapies are a goer then i'll prob just grab one of them for the time being. might use it to earn enough for a JD one by doing stuff for my mates eventually though. thanks.
No worries dude. I highly recommend Dawn dies in a bow and arrow style bender. You will need to make an adaptor but this is not difficult. I've made several cages and sliders in mine and others have made heaps more.
Check out this link for some great tips on setting up your bends.

ive used both a jd style and the bow and arrow style. The jd is easier to get accurate bends and does a slightly neater bend and id love to own one, but untill i build a buggy or start doing lots more bar work ill stick to the bow and arrow. I use dawn dies tho................... the cheap dies are for kinking pipe not bending it.

I don't see how the technique in that link can be applied when using a bow and arrow type bender
It is written for a JD2 type bender but for a first time builder, a lot of info can be extrapolated from it. Obviously there are going to be differences if you are using a bow and arrow bender but I found it more of a helpful guide on how to approach bending something up, rather than a step by step instruction manual. Sorry for any confusion.steel wrote:v840 wrote:

HiJack.
Where can I get info on Dawn dies? I have searched AND Googled to no avail.
Thanks and sorry for the Hijack again.
Cheers,
Micko
