My old man had one in a 60 that he owned. It was great to use especialy when towing, he loved it. You can use it in every gear so it in fact turned his 4 speed into an 8 speed, & also in reverse. The extra few rpm difference in each gear is a real advantage IMO.
it's never a problem until it can't be fixed, even then it' only a minor set back
does any one have some pics?
Are they strong?
do they bolt on thru the back window on a split case transfer?
can you fit them and still run PTO?
i was thinking maybe i could run one with my 5 speed so i could run 31's with 529's for hiway running instead of 35's
any info would be much apriciated
cheers

From what I have been able to find out (very little) they do have limitations regarding strength and reliability. The gears wear quickly due to their small size and they can have bearing issues. You can use a PTO with them .
"do they bolt on thru the back window on a split case transfer?" Not sure what you mean by back window.

I have one in my shorty it looks like the transfer case is larger than the original and the fact that it has Fairey stamped in the alloy makes me think that you have to seperate the transfer case to instal. I have had a couple in dare I say it rovers and they are not particulary strong especially if they are engaged constantly however if you have one it is alot cheaper than getting a 5 speed from the wreckers and they are great to engage in 4th using it as a 5th gear they seem to last well.
just my 2c
just my 2c
thanks for that infostockhorse wrote:From what I have been able to find out (very little) they do have limitations regarding strength and reliability. The gears wear quickly due to their small size and they can have bearing issues. You can use a PTO with them .

as i would probably only use the over drive on the hiway with small tyres the strength may not be much of an issue because i assume it would be all locked up for non OD operation(off road and hard acceleration
What i meannt by " back window" is that tin cover with 6 bolts in a circular type shape at the end of the input to the transfer (has a big nut and a ball bearing under it)
