Ac/Fan issues with My Cruiser

I need to make the fan work to pass a rwc.

what I have figured out so far is.

when i turn the switch I can hear and feel the relay ticking. But no fans turn on and I am not sure what the nect thing to look for is.

if anyone could help it would be great really need to sell it.

the cruiser is a fj73

I am a little bit surprised that's a RWC issue, but first up have you tried just swapping in another relay?

Next thing would be to try powering the fan directly from the battery.

Agree with that method. I would be more inclined to think that the fan motor has burned out due to the age of the vehicle. If that has happened I would expect the relay to follow suite soon after, so definitely replace the relay too if the fan is gone.

After both those items are checked out ok its the fun task of checking the wiring is all in tact and there are no loose or broken connections or severed wires.

So its a fan in the aircon/heater unit for the cab?? Not a fan to cool the condenser in front of the radiator???

Righto. Well that's not half as easy as what i thought you were referring too. Without looking at it I'd say you'll probably need to remove part of the dash to get access to the aircon/heater unit to start diagnosing it. Best bet would be to get hold of a workshop manual, but otherwise thats all the advice I can offer sorry.

dash is already apar, looks like i will have to try and google a manual.

this is shit I got a roady done 3 months ago and it passed in the same state know he wants to fail me this time.

Oh. Blower motor.

Well being a toyota I'd bet on the switch first, it's probably the standard toyota pos 4-position switch that I have had fail.

Usually there isn't actually a relay for that one, afaik. So you might be looking in the wrong place.

i just hard wired the fan and it ran so I am guessing that i have a dodgy wire somwhere between the switch and fan. Should I chase the problem or just re wire it with a inline fuse????

Multi-speed fan? How does it control speed?

In my Sigma the different speeds are achieved by dropping voltage over some resistors which sit inside a fan duct - the fan blows air over them to keep them cool. :roll:

If yours has a similar arrangement it could be a busted wire in there.

Yes, that's common. However, the resistors are only used on the lower speeds - the fastest speed should still work if that's the problem?

Have you checked the basics first eg. for blown fuses?

Have you got a multimeter so you can do some basic checks? eg. check for voltage at the rear of the fan speed switch, and then at the motor itself if that is OK...and check the earth to the motor is OK?

You can pick up multimeters dirt cheap from Dick Smith etc. and don't need anything fancy.

have a multimeter have checked the back of my switch and motor and both are fine. all earth leads to motor are new

Something with the wiring or switch must be wrong if you said earlier the motor runs fine wired directly to 12V.

Have you checked for voltage directly across the motor terminals with it installed?

yes and all seems fine, I have replaced the switch and relay si I would have to guess that it is a dodgy wire between the relay and fan motor

Had a mate come round and he did everything I did and checked everything like I did and now it runs.
