Looking at buying a hilux 1992-1996

Post by brettski »

Hi im looking at buying a hilux dual cab and have about 6-8k to spend. I have looked at a few of the 2.8lt diesels and they all seem to have 300,000kms+. is this starting to get too high for ever a diesel motor? I am currently interested in one that has 355000kms but the motor was apparently rebuilt 100,000kms ago. What other things other then the obvious should i be looking at when buying one? It seems to me that $8000 is a lot to spend on a car that has done that much work. any feedback appreciated!

you can pickj up from about 4k, but depends on condition. mine has just hit 300K and seems fine, there is always stuff to maintain etc on it on my to do list, but nothing major.

I would get a compression check done it you want to get an idea of the engine condition, then take it for a real good drive to check it out well for temps, whines etc.

there is heaps of info on here as to what to look for in that model.

the 2.8d doesnt go forever and can be shagged after 150k or kick on to 400 it all depends on the servicing and a bit of luck.

to give you an idea, i have no qualms in expecting i will drive this car well past 400k. though i am prepared to do an engine and gearbox at some stage during that time.

I just bought a 93 2.8d Lux for $5k. Has done 230,000km's.
All good bar needing tyres, as well as a few little finicky things.
Timing belts done as per service and regular oil changes done too.
I'm yet to test compression.

My tip- take it for a long test drive (including freeway cruise) before handing over yr hard earned coin.
That will give you a good idea of what it's like. I took mine for a 2 hour test drive... previous owner thought I'd stolen it!

  kind of funy anyway, poor bugger probably was having a fit.

some engines get hot and can be a pain to sort out so a long drive is worth while. but maybe let them know this first.
