air box blown to pieces

i have just brought a 105 series with gas after having it home for two weeks wanting to change the air cleaner to a k&n inspection found the air box blown apart from all angles does any one know how to prevent this from happening again i surrpose the gas backfired should i put a pod filter on for a while until i find a new air box. another question does a diesel one fit

has anyone got one spare is the next question to sell

Put some removable bungs in your airbox/intake piping so that they will blow first and vent the pressure before exploding box. Make sure you retain the bungs so that you can just press them back in when they pop out. That's assuming this happens very rarely otherwise I would look at your tune.

Mate seriously get the car to a Gas tuner. A backfire through the gas system could do all sorts of damage to the throttle body, gas convertor etc along with the airbox.

when i brought it had a gas inspection to transfer it into my name and i rang to same gas guy in rocky and he said it was fine and i cannot find anyone in this area for a second opion and i am 300klm from a town to find a gas person he told me new leadsaand plugs with the gap closed up
but the leads are liked $220 a set.

Sounds like there was a large gas build up.

As a short term fix I would leave the engine air hose clamp not too tight - that way it can "pop" off if it needs to.

We went through this on a gassed EL Falcon.

Spent big bucks on the Cr..ts at Ford before taking it to a mechanic who fixed it for $53.00

One of the air ducts had a split which caused the gas to run very lean which "somehow" causes backfires (it's got to do with the lean mixture not igniting on the combustion stroke, then catching heat from exhaust stroke just before the inlet opens and firing back through the inlet valve). This blew three airboxes up before we found it.

So my advice from experience is to check all the airducts for air leaks.

Dirill a hole in some ducting about 22mm & slip an old stubby holder over it. It wont let any dirt in but will let out back fire pressure. Alot of gas places do it & works well. To fix it so it never happens again take the gas system off & put it in the bin. After all gas is for BBQs
NGK do leads for these I think but the genuine toyota leads a great. New plugs with a slightly closed gap can help

gas cars also are more prone to backfiring if you use your right foot when trying to start it. dont pump the gas pedal.

still wont let watter in but will let presure out
but y buy a petrol gas car any way desiel is the only way to go

Is it a duel fuel set up ? ditch it and go straight gas.
You need to get the Air/Fuel mixture checked as well as check for splits or leaks on the inlet side.

I have zero problems with my LPG system, starts first time every time, never backfires, hauls arse and is economical

if your lpg system is backfiring there is a problem simple as that either its running to lean or its a ignition problem,a faulty lead or spark plug .
LPG needs a good spark its harder to ignite than petrol .
My 100series has a gasresearch lpg throttle body on it not one backfire it goes just as hard as any stock petrol 100 series.

i have no problem with power on lpg it flys a up dunes with ample power.

i can not find any one near by to find out about gas reseach systems
and they want $3000 + for injection gas even when i already have gas in it.

had similar prob with my 105 backfires when light throttle or when you hit the throttle cause was a faulty plug lead and tappets were tight
readjusted tappets pita and new leads and plugs found an airleak on the throttle body and now it is all good any questions call me 0415156693 or pm

when i had my origional gas system my air box went KA BOOM i found a diesel 100series air box at the wreckers.

all you need to do is on the lid drilla hole for the air temp probe and block a hole on the otherside with a grommet and silastic
