80 series lift problems or is it normal ?????

Post by TUFF60 »

This may be a little long but i need some help....I have a 1990 mod 80 series GXL with 4 inch lovels springs with 30mm spacers and running on 35's. I seem to have the same problem as every one else as in, (vibration with the front shaft) but only above 80 kmh. I had a new shaft made up and fitted which made a huge difference but its just not possible to sit on a highway speed which would be handy seeing as i am leaving for Frazer in the morning. But i can get around it as i removed the shaft and will just refit it before i get on the boat. Drives well other wise. I will be fitting a part time kit when i get back, just did not find this problem out untill last minute and not enough time even after a lot of research. My Q is, is the part time kit the only changes people do when lifted this hight or do i need to fitt a double cardian joint as well. (I wanted to when i had the shaft made but was a little shocked with the $1200 price tag for the joint.) The top uni is running at an angle of 103 deg which is less then my sprung over 60 series thats running at 129 deg and it is fine. I can usually nut this sort of thing my self but i am stumped. I even called some well known 4WD shops with a less than impressive responce with all respect lost for these companies all because i didnt purchase the goods from them. I would be grateful for any advice.

part time doesnt need cardon, but if you leave it constant, the d/c will fix the vibs...problem being the unis at each end of the front shaft are at very different angles now you have the 4 inch lift in....u can get ln106 rear tailshafts with d/c on dualcabs...the dc fits the front of an 80 with a shortening.

Never seen a DC joint on the rear of a hiulx as a stock item before. I've heard people getting them made but not as a stock rear part.

I've got a spare DC joint with the tail shaft cut off ready to be made up if ya want it.

You can also fit 10mm gearbox spacers to help a bit.

I lifted mine 4 inches and put 5 degree plates on, because i run ABS, it needs to stay constant, had the vibs, so i went and bought a rear two piece shaft from a lux, the rear shaft after the centre bearing has a d/c on the front of it on some of them. It might be just petrols or just diesels, but one model has it and i think it is dualcab 2.8 diesel.
