GQ 4.2 Diesel turbo install??? Turbo choice??
GQ 4.2 Diesel turbo install??? Turbo choice??
Hi all.
Am currently sorting parts for a custom install turbo set up on 4.2 diesel. I have the intake side of things sorted from 3" snorkel to custom airbox.
Am a little unsure about turbo choice. Does any one have any thoughts or have traveled the same road with a positive outcome.
Am looking at a Garrett GT28 highmount ball bearing turbo.
Have been priced around $2300 for turbo with all lines, crossover pipe, flange for custom dump pipe and a few other bits of hose and stuff.
$600 for exhaust manifold.
Some people are saying turbo not big enuff, others say it ok. Want to run 10- 15 pound with intercooler down the track. Want power. Any thoughts??

Depends on what you want from it. Where are you scorcing the manifold from and what flange is it? For the prices you have put there would you should be able to scorce a complete kit that is up to the job I would think. Let me know if you want any of the parts as I may be able to help you either way.
HEY GUYS.
I'm not 100% sure on either brand of exhaust manifold or exact turbo. I am fairley new to the turbo scene and didnt realise there were so many varients of the BB GT28. I was told the turbo is what is used for the factory upgrade in the GU. Will be susing it out today a bit more. Want to get it under way asap. Do you guys think the prices are a little steep.
I want to get a lot more go out of my wagon, (Townig camper and bashing). Am limited to $$ at the moment. Been told it should start boosting around idle and be at full boost by about 2000rpm. Does this mean it will be out of puff by the time i get around 3700-3800rpm. As i give it a pretty hard time now and again. Will be looking at intercooler later on and custom manifold.

You need to figure out what is important, where you wanna end up and then start from there.
Do you want 150kw, or 200 kw, gettin to the second one is fuck loads more $

so...
what do you think of it?
Good, still not a racecar but MUCH better. Uses less fuel, a lot more poke.
sidewayz wrote:have u had it dynoed?
Yes, but needs redoing once intercooler is added - currently about I get at the wheels (315/75R16) what the factory turbo gets at the engine.
sidewayz wrote:is it intercooled?
The bits are on bench in shed
sidewayz wrote:what psi do you run through it?
10-12

Nothing replaced or upgraded, it has been checked over and timing & fuel delivery adjusted

so $2900 + the cost of making a dump pipe, cost of the custom airbox, plumbing to the airbox and the time or cost for fitting...DanwinGQ wrote:Hi all.

FWIW I just had a DTS kit fitted to my GQ for $3400 drive in, drive out. includes all that stuff you mentioned plus a new air filter box, big dump pipe and front section of exhaust. And they changed the oil and filters incl in that price. And you know it will give a good result and look professional.
Yes $2900 is with most pieces needed. Only need a few hose clamps and possible small mod to crossover pipe.
Would be happy with about 150rwhp.
Friend owes me a cheap dump pipe. May also get him to do exhaust as I know 3" mandrel not cheap.
3" ally snorkel, sealed custom air box with 3" K&N pod cost me about $200.
Will fit myself with help of mechanic.
Only price left is for dyno and hope exhaust not to much.
Should get out of it with all new, (No 2nd hand stuff) with water cooled bb turbo (still not sure of exact type) custom intake, custom dump and exhaust for under 4g's.

What is FWIW??
What sort of figures did it produce?
How much is front section of exhaust? Flex joint, muffler??

sorry, FWIW = For What It's Worth.DanwinGQ wrote: What is FWIW??

I figured you were already set on the custom approach and maybe looking for more power than a standard kit.
the front section didn't have a flex joint in it. Its just the first few feet of pipe. No muffler. I had to get a different dump pipe to clear my PTO driveshaft on the GQ Safari import and had a flex joint put in as well.
I haven't had it dyno'd. I don't even know what boost its running... but I'm very happy with the power increase and about the same economy as before. Totally transformed the car.
no
NO YOU wont have to change lockers just crown and pinion you need 4.625 ratios for 35s and the turboglide system is greatmaverick01 wrote:i have lockers front and rear and i thought if i changed the gears i would also have to change the lockers
THE SMOKER YOU DRINK THE DANCER YOU GET
Ah. For what its worth. I'm not up with all these abbreviated bits & pieces. Thought you were slinging shit on me. All good.
I am hoping to get a bit more power than the standard off the shelf kit. As soon as I can afford an intercooler i will up the boost a bit. Also have been told the boost comes on harder and faster with ball bearing turbo.
Trial and error, should know in the next few weeks when i get a chance to run it against a few mates with off shelf kits.
Why change diff gears?? Personal opinion, I would rather the lower revs and economy benefts of highway cruising. If it gets away while in low range go with reduction gears in transfer.

BB turbo's spool up faster, not harder. 12psi is still just 12psi, but having ball bearings as opposed to bush/plain bearings means less rolling resistance hence faster spooling.
IMO, if you're looking at a costing of around $4k (most likely more) for a DIY turbo conversion, i honestly think you might be better of either a)going to a workshop and getting one fitted; b)getting a workshop to make a package for you and then just fit it yourself (save $1500 labour).
And as for your K&N filter, read this before commiting to installing it:

I would go for the Disco Potato (tried and proven many many times), which is available with a choice of two exhaust turbine housings (0.64 or 0.82). Your choice in housing will depend on your driving style, tyres, diff ratios, and most importantly - what sort of power you will be seeking at the end of the day.

they are useless do not deal with themDanwinGQ wrote:its all from the ARB store at cabulture. Northside arb. Bribie island turn off.
my denco kit comes on at full boost at 2500rpm has nothing down low all up high which i dont mind cause u have to get up it to get on boost.. if u want boost earlier i need a smaller exhuast housing.
OK. so it seems that K&N filters are not so good for running around in the dust.
Any suggestions for an alternative 3" pod??????????
I hav heard that the paricular ARB store is a bit ordinary. If I get a better price elsewhere I will take it. I currently have Chapman's on Sunshine Coast looking at other options and prices.

It is a nickname, however most people in the industry (turbo, diesel, street) will know what it is.DanwinGQ wrote:Also, Disco potato??

And on the air filter, i'm not too sure if there is such thing as a "good" pod filter. Most people are running paper element type filters from various cars as they are cheap and offer better filtration.
