Looking at buying a dual cab hilux, 2.8 diesel. Searching through some posts on this forum and im constantly reading about the lack of power that these motors have. I dont need a power house and never really in much of a hurry, ill just be loading my quad onto the back and cruising around on the beach at stockton. will the hilux be suitable for this or should i be looking for another make? budget is under 10k so the 3.0TD is not really an option. cheers...

hey mate theyre slow as anything. but if u don't mind being slow theyre faily good..

I drove some beaches up at coffs harbour in mine with 31's. Had it in low ratio most of the time, and didn't have any issues. Probably could have used high but didn't matter anyway. Fully loaded tray + canopy and 2 other people in the car..

The 2.8 in a lux makes for a slow slow slow slow ride. But I happen to like it, reasonably smooth power delivery makes driving around town a breeze, just a slow breeze. 90km/hr tops out on the highway too and will drop to 60 when it sees a hill anywhere but I dont mind it at all shes reliable as hell, always know its going to start in the morning which means more to me than a quicker ride. Plus you have to try very hard to get a speeding ticket which helps.

Doesnt mind stocko either, will not go as hard up the dunes as others but holds her torque pretty well just pick a gear and stick it.

Take one for a drive and see for yourself. I dont think there unbearably slow, it just a more relaxed driving style. :lol:

They are pretty damn slow. you really cant be in a rush. but some are definitely slower than others.

You can add a surf turbo to them for about $500-$700 or buy one already turboed - its so common that its not hard to find. this changes them significantly. yes they are still slow but instead of sitting on 90-100km you can sit on 100-115km without to much issues. it also gives you an extra gear up hill, so where you were in 3rd at 60km/hr you can then sit on 80 in 4th.

it is the single best thing you can do to a 2.8 hilux, it changes the car completely.

I also find that offroad some hills were to steep to hold low 2nd, where as now they are no problem after adding the turbo.

As mentioned above they are a pretty tuff little motor as long as they get serviced regularly.

I love my lux :armsup: just in the process of selling my 06 xr6 in favor of driving my 89 lux everyday...

Where's the best place to look for one? Wreckers?

Yes the 'Lux's are slow but not unbearable so. More 'relaxed'.
If I was driving freeway miles every day it might get tirsome, but it's ok for the 15 min run to work...

they aint that bad. my mate with a 2.8 runner easily holds 110 with a trailer(takes a lil while to get to 110 tho...), and it has enuf guts to rally drive it on the forestry roads. it wont win a drag with anything other than a logtruck, but they are reliable and will go all day.

yeh before i done my 3rz conversion i had a 2.8 diesel, well looked after its whole life but it had 335 on it and was still running sweet, sold it to a mate and its still going well.. Mine went alright, alloy tray and 31's. used to push my 34'' simex fairly well offroad and the odd bitchumen run :lol: Really bomb proof, mine was seeing 4500rpm offroad and was loving it. I get one again, great donk i recon.

2.8 is slow but if you want more power later on just get a turbo fitted to it.

reliable as.

i've only had 1 false start due to an old as hell battery.

i have a single cab my mate has a dual cab no dramas.

my mate drives pretty hard in it aswell hasnt failed him

they go about 1 per week on ebay.
you see them every now and then on this site for sale, or you could chuck a wanted ad in somewhere.
wreckers would be the most expensive place to find them, some would be ok price wise others would want some stupid amount.
many of them are pretty old now so a basic rebuild with new seals etc would be a good idea. also check the vanes arent stuffed from too much heat etc. not too much play in the prop shaft.

when you get one make sure you get the manifold etc off a surf as well, you simply move a stud and it bolts up.

if you get all the hoses and cross over etc it saves alot of work. but the cross over on mine is home made.

you also need to add an oil return line into the sump although i have heard of people just putting a t piece into another return line.

hey mate i have a 2.8 lux dual cab and have for 3 and a half years now.It starts every time and runs well but my injectors and maybe pump need looking at so its a bit slow.But if you say ur not in a rush and just general 4wd and running your quad around you cant beat them i say.I havent had a mechanical failure yet,only part ive had to replace is one unijoint.If you can get a turboed one,or if you end up with a good motor add a Turbo later on.

Hills are the killer
