FJ45 - what do I need to fix the handbrake?

The handbrake on my FJ45 (with a 2H diesel engine and H55F gearbox) is incomplete, so I'm trying to work out exactly what parts I need to get hold of in order to get it working.

Inside there's the handbrake lever:

Then we've got the handbrake cable which runs to the bottom of the firewall and stops. It's either been cut or broken, so I'll definitely need a new cable:

Then I assume this drum brake thing on the back of the gearbox is where the cable is meant to run to:

This larger part on the front side spins freely when I turn it by hand. It seems to have a slight wobble and has a rattle to it like something inside is loose.


So, any ideas on what the best way for me to get a working handbrake is?

Pull the rear shaft out,, slide the brake drum off, then see what is missing or loose, replace the cable if its no good, do you have a workshop manual??

Very simple setup, not hard to work out with abit of mechanic know how,

The hand bake cables are similar cost to the speedo cable But you have to remove the hand brake drum anyway to fit it up. So you may as well start there.

Start by pulling it all apart.
Replace the speedo housing seal, this has probably failed and leaked oil into the brake assembly.
Clean all parts real good.
Replace brake shoes.
Get into the hand brake drum friction surface with some emery paper, get all of the rust and rubbish out of there.
Put it all back together.
Install cable.
With the tail shaft still off and the transfer in 2wd neutral, adjust the adjuster on the rear of the brake assembly till there is drag, the back it off one notch.
Adjust out cable slack and youre good to go.. or stop?

This worked on my 40 for a few weeks, but then sand got in there and killed the brake shoes, so now im back to square one..
