Tell me about 60's
I'm without a 4x4, can't really decide on what I want but my immediate budget is 5k.
Looking at a 60 within this price range at the moment, would love it if I could have a few questions answered by owners:
1) Will they cruise on 100-110 ok? It's a 5spd 4.0 Diesel, I'm guessing 2H??
2) It's got 425,000k's. Seems like a lot to me?
3) It's got electric brakes fitted, so I'm taking a guess that its been used as a tow horse. And in my mind that's a bad thing. Am I crazy and/or paranoid, or right?
4) If I where to throw 2" lift at it, will it fit 33"s? That over-hang on them makes me cringe. I don't want something that's going to be crap offroad.

60 + Turbo, 33"s
I had a HJ60 a few years ago now but here goes (2H,5speed
)
1. Yes it`ll do 110 but you`ll think the fuel tank has a hole as the guage will be dropping just as quick as the passing landscape. I found cruising at 95 was good fuel wise
2. Not really a lot of K`s I sold my old 60 in 2002 and it already had more than that on it
3.Why you worried its been a tow vehicle
4.I only had 31`s on my ole girl and she was fine both on and off road

Mate try get yourself a turboed 2h or a 12ht model, would be my advise.
Very little effort to get 35s under them, 40-,50mm bodylift some xtended shackles, 2"springs...
They are a top truck, rare to find one without rust though, but you can get lucky...

1. Better cruising at 100 than 110.RockyF75 wrote:I'm without a 4x4, can't really decide on what I want but my immediate budget is 5k.

2. It's getting up there.
3. ONly if it has towed in 5th gear.
4. Yes.

Are 60s easy to work on too?? I'm picking one up on the weekend but it needs quite a bit of TLC. But it does come with some pretty cool accessories like ARB winch bar + winch, spotties, roof basket/rack thing, tow bar, rust holes and that smell all old toyotas seem to have. It'll be my 1st 4wd (finally) and a bit of a resto/DIY project, can't wait to get started on her... and the best part.. its costing me nothing!!
Also, does anyone know the stud pattern of a 60?

Cheers for that! Yeah i just didnt wanna make the mistake of picking up the wrong kinda rims!
And yes rust is a real pain in the arse. There is only 5 spots that really need attention though, the rest of the body is really straight and the paint is good! I think there is a rats nest in the airbox which may also need attention haha.

Most importantly, they look super HOT as a dual cab, once youve destroyed both rear quarters and sick off smashing rear sliding windows

hands and mums dont count!!!
Well, as it stands I'm picking one up this Satdurday, not the one first mentioned.
$4200, its red, paint's rough but there's no rust that I can find. 1984 Turboed 2H, bullbar, rear bar, draws, cargo barrier, roof basket, side steps, A/C, Power steering, big bull lights, spare wheel carrier, and probably some other stuff I can't remember
Speedo doesn't work, since christmas the seller says. He's getting a cable for it to include in the sale though.
other than that the only concern is a slight noise in all gears but 4th. Anyone else have this in their 60? Its not very noisy at all so I was thinking its probably just a common thing on something that old?

If it's all gears but 4th i'd suspect counter shaft bearings.
As it's been a tow rig, look out for 5th gear falling out under deceleration
as for fuel economy It seems to vary from person to person. but when I had mine it managed 11l/100k on the highway at 110. I've gotten 14-15 before but that's towing cars on trailers. I've heard people say they get that normally. If it chews that much fuel get a reputable diesel shop to tune it up. The 2h is actually a very economical donk.
Also keep it under 3k rpm.
