Vacuum pumps for diesel alternator upgrades

Post by chimpboy »

I am not a diesel guy, but I know that when the time comes to upgrade an alternator in a lot of diesels it's a real pita because they have a vacuum pump mounted on them.

This struck me as a possibly viable item, even allowing for exchange rates, to allow a normal, used, car alternator to be bolted in instead. Rather than forking hundreds for an alternator, fork for a pump like these ones now and grab a commodore or falcon alternator for forty bucks instead with 85, 100, 120 etc amps.

No connection with the seller or anything, just thought it looked like an alright deal!

If you think this is a bad idea let me know. I freely admit I am not very diesel oriented so I don't really know if there's enough vacuum from one of these to take over from the alternator-mounted pump. I think so, but I am not sure.

looks the goods to me. then the big Q will be is it ADR compliant. esp if you have a bad acco at fault where brakes were found to be the problem.

Thanks for sharing. If i just hadnt found a way to put twin alt on my POS i would have snapped this baby up.

Cheers

Electric vac pumps were fitted OEM on plenty of yank V8s, they do work.
Another option is a pully driven one - Delicas have the vac pump integrated with the p/s pump.
