Steering box Choices

I'm almost finished building up a Hilux using some nissan based axles, I may have a shot at some winch type comps in the future.
Now, I was originally planning on going to a GQ or GU box but after having read this thread http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic149151.php

It seems like the winch boys are breaking them, as I'll be running 37's and have a healthy V8 anyway, I'm a little concerned at reading this.

Any suggestions for a bulletproof steering box ?

I know of at least 3 cases (including myself) of gu steering lock issues, I would never touch one again without internal modification.

Look at a ford or sagnaw box. There are a few on the howe site

please don't think those guys are the height of engineering prowess!!!! if TJM and ARB don't sell it them how can it be any good?? :rofl:

There are simple cheap and effective solutions to each problem!! but thats whats seperates us... ahahahahaha :twisted:

(there will be a cost-effective upgrade available off the shelf VERY shortly)

Ok, any other suggestions guys, a mate suggested a 60's or 80 series box

Are you able to go hydro assist? Will take a lot of pressure off the box.

No, for 2 reasons, this still has to have manners on road,and as such I'm trying to keep unsprung weight as low as possible.
the other reason, as mentioned earlier, I may have a crack at some of the navrun type events in the future

Hydro assist (done properly) will feel exactly the same as a std power steer system, and it is legal to use in winch events. It will also stop/reduce sector shaft breakage.....
