which types of gauges

Hi all

just been looking at some gauges, want ppls opinions on what are the main things to be monitoring on your 4wd...

oil, water, and amps...anything else??? there's a heap of different gauges out there, with oil do you recommend oil pressure or oil temp, what about gearbox or transfer case oil, if you do oil pressure and temp do you need 2 sender units and is there outlet points to fit 2 senders? then with the battery if you have dual batteries would you run 2 gauges or do both batteries run through the one sender...I've basically had nothing to do with gauges before so have no idea...

I'm in the process of putting a holden v6 in a navara, will be using holden auto, getting custom radiator built and also putting gq diffs under it and running gq trasnfer case.

also I have no idea when it comes to electrics...and will be getting an auto elec to do the wiring...

do you suggest anything else?

Depends on what gauges that you have in the dash already and how accurate they are.

You will have to decide also on whether u want electrical/mechanical gauges also. some are better on some things and others are not.

in mine i put in a volts, oil pressure (not working at moment) and mechanical water temp.

If you have an auto then yes i would get a tranny temp gauge,

batteries, are you going to run manual battery switch or automatic style. ( i have a manual style and hooked the gauge to both so the switch controls what battery is read.

its all good getting gauge as they are useful but there is no point having them if you dont know how hot/how much pressure your car should have.
i am still looking for the recomended oil pressure and oil temp for my 1.6 zook.

i run 1 battery gauge for 2 batterys by using a 3 pole swicth and running the power from each battery to each sied of the swicth and use the common to the gauge and just earth the guage to the body

in my turbo td42 i have:

vdo pyro
auto metre mech water, meach oil pressure, mech boost and electric volts.

mine is a dx so the only dash gauges i have is a fuel and temp guage. but i have found the std dash temp gauge to be pretty accurate.

you don't necessarily need to know what the pressure should be.

if you get one fitted and look at what it does when your driving then. if the pressure begins to drop or move differently to normal you will notice that the reading is different therefore a problem.

i dont know what the oil pressure should be on my patrol but the gauge usually does the same thing. sits around 2 then raises to nearly 4 when highway cruising. recently the pressure reading had been low, below 2 and just above 2 on the highway so i went to the mechanic. dodgy sender.

Im about to fit an electrical oil pressure and water temp gauges, i reckon thats mostly all you need for a non high peformance engine, maybe a volt gauge as well.
