Can't find the knock ??

I have a small amount of movement in the front (Bundy coil front end), and can't find it anywhere.
Checked the wheel bearings, steering linkages, swivel hub bearings, steering box, coils are captured, steering stabiliser is near new, radius arm and panhard bushes are good and it's still there :? .
Also had a pair of trained eyes look over it all as well, just incase.

When I rest my hand against the tyre and someone else pulls the bull bar from side to side (with force), there is the smallest knock which is felt on the tyre.

Did the same thing with an 80 series and a Disco and had the same knock, but both were worse than mine. Also did it to a front beam axle leaf sprung lux and had no play at all.

Is it a coil thing, or can someone point me in the right direction please.

Doug it's not just the coil moving in it's seated position? My jeep has the same noise from the coil when you move it. If your coil is captured both ends then this may be of no use to you. Check the steering box make sure she is still tighter than a nuns nasty.

Are you running a sway bar? that could cause it also?

Yea, coils are captured top & bottom (or they fall out on the floor :lol: ).
Couldn't do the nut up any tighter on the pitman arm.
I do run a swaybar on road and bushes are ok in there as well, might take it off and try just incase your right.

Any other ideas ??

You need to star thinking like i do doug. when you drive them hard you expect clunks and bangs.So long as nothing is falling off and it still drives straight and stops think yourself lucky.



On a more serious note,I get some noise from the springs moving about but if yours are fixed then it cant be them.


do you have domed wheel nuts?If the studs stretch they can bottom out on the domed end of the wheel nuts and not on the rim.

Yea, I do have the domed wheel nuts, but wouldn't that feel like play in the wheel bearings when checking them ??

Not sure what it would feel like just giving anything i can think of that might possibily cause your problem.

Really has me stumped so I'm going all possible options

i had a knock in my 80 and i found that there was a small crack in one side of the front control arm bracket on the diff. i thought it was the coils moving when i first heard it and payed no attention to it until i did a service on it and found the crack.

Please remember to update this thread doug, I think i might have a similar noise on mine and so far I haven't located it. One more swivel hub and bearing to tension up this weekend and then hopefully it will go away. I haven't thought to check the radius arm mounts on the axle itself either.

PS: I have tried asking it "who's there?" when it knocks, but it never answers. :(

had a similar noise in my bundy turned out to be the bushs in the panhard rod even though they looked fine the wernt hard enough to stop the nocking but new harder bushs in and it was all good

Thanks, have near new bushes in panhard, nolethane (sp??) at chassis end and genuine toyota rubber (2 piece) at diff end.

so were mine got new bushs machined and noise went away
i thought the other bushs i fitted were ok but they wernt
and you cant buy genuine bushs for the bundy any more
FOR SALE hilux parts all models

Interesting, the bushes came from Toyota and I searched the part # on the on line EPC and was confirmed by Toyota, but maybe I don't have the correct bush ???

Can anyone confirm that the diff end of the panhard on a Bundy is a 2 piece bush ??
The one I replaced was also a 2 piece tho :?
