Easy power on turbo lux's

Post by Outer Limits Hilux »

G'Day all

Just doin a bit of talking around about turboed 2.8 luxs. The reason why they dont respond too well to large amounts of boost (15 to 20 psi) is because the engines run such a high compression ratio.

To resurrect this prob is easy, maybe too easy. was thinkin, if you got say 3mm copper sheet, (quality grade) and an old head gasket, you could take them to a laser cutting shop, cut it out and put that in instead. it would def lower compression ratio which in turn could run more boost. a simple compression test would show results.

Yay or Nay??

just a question, since a diesel uses compression (and heat) to ignite, wouldn't putting in a 3mm gasket lower it too much at idle so that it may not run properly?

I know with the turbo on 20psi boost, the compression will be high but with out the boost when the compression drops to idle is where i thought it might cause problems?

Just a idea. i have no idea

It will only be a problem when cold, the glow plugs wont work as well so youll need to glow it more than usual.

Once runing the cyl temps are enough to create the correct detonation timing.

lowering the compression ratio will mean it will be more gutless at low rpm until significant boost is produced. Also less engine braking when going down steep hills

Sitting here scratching my head. I had a 2.8 hilux with a DTS turbo running max 9lb boost and it drove like a petrol car went fantastic. Just buy a V8 and do the conversion. Seriously mine went real well maybe you should look at who set up your injector pump.

I've got the v8 conversion an a mates got the gutless 2.8
when he's flatout in top gear i'm just starting to think about changing into 3rd,
Mine seems to have just as god engine braking on hills an will out pull his anyday of the week
Best value way of getting more power out of the 2.8 is to convert to v8

changing the compression on a diesel kind of defeats the purpose of having a diesel correct?

Do you mean you wound up your boost and it didn't give the gain you had hoped?

My guess is with that much boost you're sending in hot air from an overworked turbo. Heat is your enemy with boost on any engine.

If you want 20psi, run a big turbo and big cooler. If you throw a compressor of any sort out of it's efficiency range there's a good chance you could even lose power with too much boost, because of the hot air density.
