How the hell do you change the steering stab in the hj79? I can seem to get mine off :(!

go to a tool shop and by the threaded clamp type tie rod end separator. loosen of the nut, use the tie rod end separator to push the tapered joint apart.
Mr Toyota thinks these need to be done up hell tight. I flogged the crap out of mine on the 80series and still couldnt get it to pop apart with out buying the proper tool.
Dont buy a cheap one, i broke the first one I bought, the joint was that tight

I removed the steering damper off the poolux using the same techniquie that Ray described above.
I sprayed with WD40 for a couple of days prior to removing, then I undid the castle nut, and bashed the crap out of it with a big f-off hammer.
I also used a balljoint remover, it looks kind of like a fork, with a tapered edge.
Lots and lots of gentle persusaion.
