I'm probably going to get a few "why bother"s for asking this but I'm not all that familiar with transfer gears and was wanting to know if I bought a set (something like calmini's 4.9:1s) could I simply put in the low range gear set for the time being and leave my standard highs in? The reason being I am only running 29s on my sierra with a 1.6 16v, and whilst my crawl ratio isn't that flash I'm reasonably happy with the highway performance. 3000rpm gives an indicated 90km on the vitara speedo I put in but it's probably closer to 100. I figure if and when I upgrade to 31s I can then replace the high range gears. My 29s are pretty much brand new which is why I'm not looking at upsizing any time soon and given that the boys in blue are rumoured to be cracking down on big lift and tyres more than 2" over standard down here in the near future I don't want to go attracting too much attention. I think they're mainly concerned with the plethora of 8" lifted hiluxes running 35"+ tyres that seem to be all the rage here at present! :roll:

Um.........NO. Take a look at how a zook (or most) t-cases are assembled. You have to swap the complete gear sets most of the time.

If it was me, and there was an option to only put in the low range gears, I'd put the whole kit in with a new set of bearings including the needle roller bearings if not included with the kit.

If you're talking about the trail tough 4.9s then they are a 16% reduction in high range, if you are talking about the Calmini 4.16:1s then they are a 12% reduction in high range.

It will make the zook a bit more driveable especially in windy tassie roads I reckon...the engines like to rev and I don't think you wil suffer too much from excessive fuel consumption.

AFAIK the only way is to run twin cases i beleive to do what u want to do.

if u can find a 1L case with 4wd light that may be ok for you about 12% drop overall in high and low.

not much but may be enough. its enough for me in the terriain i drive too

I might have to try for a set of the 4.16:1s then. Thanks matey! And yes it does suffer in the wind!

I might do a bit of a search on this then. I have a mate with a stack of 1ltr zooks in his paddock. He actually gave me the fibreglass panels to turn my soft top into a ute (not done yet) for nix so I can't see too much hassle in acquiring a cheap transfer case! Thanks for the idea!
