SD33T running 18psi with no intercooler?

Post by twr7cx »

There's a Patrol for sale near me with an SD33T engine in it. The guy selling it says that it is running 18psi of boost and has had the injector pump screwed up to 340cc, bigger fuel lines, 3" exhaust and a pod filter.

Surely this would be pretty sketchy running such high boost pressure with no intercooler? Is it hard to adjust it back to a more sane level or boost?
He informs me that to get the boost increase "...the waste gate has been closed on it and i just know its running at the right mixture i have had a fair bit to do with diesels know a few mechanics and have worked on them my self".

Picture of the engine bay:

I realise that. I'm pretty keen on the car though, but this boost story is quiet a concern but. It's about 45 minutes drive from me, so I'm not that keen on wasting 2 hours going to look at it if this is going to be a big issue...

Is this a blow off valve on it (the black thing in the red circle)?

its a bit hard to make out but yes it looks like a diesels version of a BOV.

The factory turbo GU's have these, its mainly just a boost limiting device if something were to go wrong with fuel or the wastegate.

I cant see him getting 18psi if thats still installed.

Falcon alternator actually. Reckons the diesel one is still there too for the air thingo for the brakes, but the Falcon alternators are cheaper to replace.

Oh yes V pulley.
That air thingo is a vac pump for the brake booster ;)

If he cant spend $2 at carlovers washing the engine bay before trying to sell it, why would anyone in their right mind waste 2c inspecting it.

Youd be mad to even consider it. the boost relief works at about 6-11 psi in factory trim. mine ran ok with the waste gate blocked off, But i didnt add more fuel.

then also look at how the cattery is held in place with a bodgy chain setup. IF thats the main battery its on the wrong side for a factory SD33T

Certainly is!!

So basically he has the turbo running at 100% capacity (fully closed wastegate).

The "blow-off valve" is actually a pressure release vavle for engine safety - it is supposed to prevent overboost and/or runaway (ie. jammed wastegate).

IMO, i wouldn't waste ANY time or money on it. Its a dodgy peice of crap. There are far better examples out there.

take it for a burn, would be great to see how it pulls with 17psi of boost, it'd be impressed if he gets that out of standard turbo, wouldn't buy it though, it'll crack the head on a big hill or up the beach when its working

danny40 couldn't resist!

I have to agree...what a horrible way to advertise your Patrol. It looks like total ass and the motor is likely about to smoke the crank...who cares about the head when bits of the crank come flying out of the block/sump!? It only has 3 main bearings....how long you think it will run on constant 18psi boost with no mods to help save it? I am sure the head is already cracked....

You be much better off finding the old stocker granny car on low profile tires for the $1000-2000 range and mod it up yourself from there.
