Turbo or Intercooler????????

Post by charlie-Y61-GU »

I have one of the most commonly asked questions about and i have spent weeks reading alot of different forums and still can't make up my mind what is the best option.

I have a 1999 4.2 turbo diesel patrol wagon with a KnN air filter and 3" mandral bent exhust. These two things alone have made a significant difference. But like most guys i want more.

The big question is can i replace the standard turbo with a larger aftermarket one increase the boost without ajusting the fuel pump without causing damage to the engine?
Also improving fuel economy.

Or is an Intercooler the way to go keeping the standard turbo.

At the end of the day i would like more power and torque, with the best economy possible on a reasonable budget. Not to much to ask?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be great.
I live in Brisbane so locations/ workshops that can supply and assist would be fantastic.

water to air intercooler, water/meth injection, a bigger turbo will only take longer to spool

Intercooler. Search Laminova on the forums. With just the laminova water to air cooler and upping the fuel on a standard fuel pump on a TD42 GQ, I have over 104KW and 420Nm on 32's and 4.1's with reasonably low EGT'S. That 25% or more Kw and Nm. Once you have the intercooler, you will then also be ready for the bigger turbo that you will get later.

its a gu coil cab, 3" mandrel, fitted a custom front mount at the same time, tweaked fuel screw, yet to do the timing, running 4.1 diff gears on 36 x 15.5 mickey t atz's

IT HAULS ASS

Worth every single cent

On another note, nobody else has said it yet, but if you care about your engine and don't want dust etc in it, DITCH THE KnN FILTER!

Well to make more power or torque you need more fuel

However if you add more fuel, temps go up and damage occurs. there are pro and cons of both. You need to get a good ratio or AIR to fuel.

1. Intercooler
This will reduce your inlet temps (if done correctly) and you can screw more fuel into the pump. However you will only be able to do so much till the pump runs out on your setup with an intercooler expect around 110kw at the wheels, the turbo will be a limiting factor.

My suggestion on intercooler would be a front mount, I just dont like the water to air setups and front mounts are proven.

2. Turbo
Yeah its possible to adapt your manifold to suit a garrett roller bearing, yeah it will spool up faster you give you a bit more poke once you screw a bit more fuel in as this turbo will flow more air however to get full potential off it you will need an intercooler.

My suggestion would be to intercool first, see how you go with that, then when the funds allow or should the turbo shite itself then go the garrett roller.

On my gu i had garrett roler, frount mount 4" pipe work max power is around 130kw because the gu pumps lack fuel however once they are modified expect to get around 180kw + with 25 - 28 psi...
