should i or should i not buy a 60
hey guys,
ive been looking for a 60 to build up as a bush truck, not been looking for anything overly great, just something that runs and isnt about to break down, aslong as the mechanicals are in good working order i dont give two hoots about the body.
as i am planing all the usualy things you do to a truck thats only going to see bitumen to get to the bush, im not to fussed in condition of the paint, or the rear pannels, as i will eventualy be looking into loping off the back half of the wagon and i will be chopping gaurds to fit tyres, i am not going to lift it any more than 2 inch suspension, and i 100% will not be body lifting it,
any ways the main point of this little novel is that just doing a random trawl to see whats arround and at what prices, i found a red 81 sixty manual, diesel, for 2 grand, at a car yard, which just happens to be very close to the gfs house, where i am staying the night and not working tomorow. so i was thinking about giving it a look at.
as i happen to be out of work i think id be a dolt to buy it, if and only if it was mechanicaly ok. however that being said, i do have the cash so i could afford it. and i know that as i am activly seeking work, i would kick myself if i didnt take the chance and grab it if it was worth it, and then get a job next week and not be any worse off.
any ways, i need some advice from the people that a love what i love, and b may be a bit more wise than i lol....
cheers fellas
Alistair

Re: should i or should i not buy a 60
The old 2H deisel engines in the 60's will go forever if looked after and maintained regularly. These are a trustworthy work horse to play with also.... I know you said the panel work don't matter.... BUT, the rust in the roof gutters is a dead set killer and you'll be forever chasing your tail fixing up the new spot that comes out 6mths after the one you just fixed. I bought a wagon body to chop into a ute... the gutters were in great condition ... until I chopped through it and seen the internal cross section of it........ there's ALOT of rust build up under the surface that isn't seen. By the time it bubbles out, you'll never stop it, but that said..... if you're after a top truck that'll go all day... the 60 series deisels are great!!!Wambat wrote:hey guys,

there will ALWAYS be 60 series trucks at 2000$, so dont rush if you ARE NOT in a job.
have some patience, get into some work and then buy a truck.
what happens if you buy the truck and it throws a rod out the side of the block? how are you gona run it on dole money?
patience my friend, is indeed a virtue.
Cheers,
Jes

it was the girl friend pushing me to have a look at it( i think to shut me up) but i thought better of it, having said that though, even if i did buy it, and it chucked a rod it wouldn't matter(as much) as i already have a daily driver.
lokka, the 12ht is an awesome engine, i had a hj61 Sahara about two years ago, but i killed it, only thing that never missed a beat in it was the motor, i have been told from other people,(although every one has an opinion and they are not always right though) that it is possible to run 35s on a 60 without a body lift, which i am hoping is correct, as that is where im heading, will be looking to run 35 - 37 tsl boggers,
but i am assuming that alot of grinding and panel massaging will have to be done
cheers fellas,

i will sell you mine for 1500.
85 FJ62 but with a 2H five speed dropped in. 2 inch spring lift and 2 inch body lift. Front auto locker. body isn't particularly rusty at all. But panels are dinged and crack in windscreen.
Melbourne.

At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
mate, am off to the mechanics, tomorrow to get the daily driver bombadore checked up, will talk to him about that when i go, and see how much the service sets me back(as like ive stated abouve, being out of work dont help)
how ever, how desperate are you to sell?? as if your not desperate and can hold out for a little while(month or two), when i got a job and i give it a look over that could be a done deal.
