This Tyre Topic is for members to post about BFG Mud Terrains. Post your thoughts on grip, noise, wear, airing down, or anything else you consider of interest to other members.

There have been three versions of the BFG Mud Terrain.

The original (and some would argue, the best) version has been around for ever - well, a long time, anyway.

A new version, the KM, was released (when?) This was similar to the original, with "sidebiters" on the sidewalls.

I have BFG muddies on my sierra, no issues at all.
Noise ? as if, the car has no roof or windows
I have had them down to 10psi for driving on the beach / dunes no dramas.

On my (now sold) Navara I had 3 sets of the same tyre, always got around 60k km.

Like all tyres they're fine until you clog 'em

The advantage to me, is they fit the standard rim without any BFH mods.

I run 33 / 10 1/2 R 15's (original version) on my TJ.

Installed in late 2004.

They are the US manufactured type.

I've done .. maybe 40-50K on them.

Never had a puncture or leak (touch wood).

Wear really well, great grip in every environment I've had em in. Sand / Mud / Rocks.

I've not had other mud tyres before so I can't compare the noise.. but it's certainly noticeable particularly in a rag top.

Had the original pattern.. Loved them. Couldnt fault them, although they were my first MT.. 33x12.5s

Got the 33x12.5 KM's couldnt wait to get rid of them. Maybe I was spoilt with my previous 2 sets of tires.
Me personally, I disliked them on road... Compared to the older pattern they were shit - IMO.

Squirmed everywhere on the road, specially on corners felt like the treadblocks were rolling around, steering was crud with a bit of pace on, and had a nice moment once in the wet, it was fairly wet, so may have happened with any MT I couldnt tell u.

Offroad they werent too bad.. I don't like deep mud, it fawks things and gets costly quick, I'll leave it for the kiddys.

So general muddy conditions and tracks they were good. Although they weren't that old when I sold the car, the sidewalls hadnt softened much, so had to let them right down to get them to bulge, but they may have come good with time.
Sold them with the car, and are still on it I think as daily tires.

The Original was just the MT.

Hi All,

I have a 60 series with Maxxis Mudders on, so I can compare tyres. I could also be accused of being biased, as apart from the Maxxis on the 60, I have been running BFG Muddies since 1990.

Anyway -

Original MTs. Took a set to the Cape on a re-built 1975 FJ40 with a fibreglass body. I agree with -Scott-, bloody awesome tyre. Second set of MTs was on the 60 series for a trip to the Gulf of Carpentaria. We were heading for Lawn Hill National Park from Camooweal and were crossing the Gregory River. I reckon someone dropped a packet of razor blades, as when I came out of the river I had a 4 inch slice through the tread. I put the last spare that I had (a brand new Khumo muddy) on which lasted 60 km before it blew out, leaving me to eat scenery sideways. To cut a long story short, I limped into Lawn Hill, took the BFG of the rim, put 4 or 5 layers of canvas over the cut inside the tyre with contact cement, put in a tube and drove it on the development road to Burktown. When I got there the split in the tread was no larger, and this vehicle was full of people and had a loaded, full length roof rack! That's when I began trusting BFGs, they definitely saved my ar$e that time! Complained to Khumo Australia, they told me that I had used the tyre "....outside of its designed use...." . :?: Surprise, I won't use Khumos any more. :finger:

(does this mean that a damaged BFG is stronger that an brand new Khumo? :? :? :? )

KMs - Tend to go along with bogged a little bit. Generally similar pattern but different compound rubber. They lasted well on the Hunjy, but I was a bit disappointed by the amount of chipping and sidewall damage I got. I also destroyed 2 sidewalls doing things that the old MTs did without any problems. I believe that the sidewalls were too soft, making on-road handling a bit of a challenge! Still a great tyre, never actually had one fail apart from severe damage offroad.

I have a new set of the BFG KM2 Muddies on the 100. All I can say is "Bloody Hell!". When you drive them on the road, from new they are QUIET! Even in the rain (and we've had a fair bit in Queensland lately) they drive like a road tyre, they are that good in the wet. I thought that the old Muddies weren't too bad in the wet, but these are incredible. On the road I am finding that I have to brake harder towards the end when I pull up behind a car at the lights, it would seem that the rolling resistance of these tyres is far less than the old pattern. This is also shown in the increase in fuel economy that I am getting.

Offroad, when you first look at them you think that they can't be as good as the old pattern. They don't look as agressive. but once you get them offroad and into the dirt and rocks, hang on! They bite and hang on better than ever. The side lugs are bigger, the main tread lugs are not scalloped any more, they are different sizes. The sidewall is stronger with more belts to protect it. They stick like the proverbial to a blanket.

I am wrapped in them. I've only had them a short time, but I am impressed. I don't care that other tyres may be cheaper, my experience is that you only get what you pay for. The Maxxis are great tyres, but compared to the Maxxis Mudders these things are incredible.

That would mean that I have had a set of the MTs, the KMs and the KM2s! BFGoodrich should give me a medal (or at least shares in the company)!

BFG (Michelin) are running a promotion from 1 May - 30 June where if you buy a set of four BFGs they will give you a Bushranger Black Max compressor. I bought mine too early to qualify, but I am putting the hard word on my supplier as I bought eight KM2s.

sounds a it pricey. i just paid (4-5 weeks ago) $400 per tyre fitted and balanced for 305/70 bfg km's. i didn't shop around either

Geeeeeezzzus!!!!!!!! I was quoted $364 per corner for 33 12.5 15s km2s last week. I think the above prices are a bit rich :shock:

Biggest waste of my time buyin them (33x12.5x15 Kms). Everytime I went off road and aired them down to around 20 I got a flat or slow leaks due to the stupid idea of a rim protector. Have now run many others tyres and never had this trouble. I sold the BFGs a month after buying as got sick of takeing them done to the tyre mob to clean out the bead etc.

That's strange mick, I've never seen that happen before. The rim protector is outside the tyre's bead, so unless you were getting lots of dirt or sticks caught between the rim and the bead I don't see how it could happen.

Anyway, I'm not here to argue with you, everyone to their own opinion.

As for the prices, I'm off for three months in the deserts and Kimberley. I've been here before, I didn't let price get in the way of a tyre-trouble free trip. If you want to blame someone for the increase in price, blame the Labor party. They are the ones that put the import duty on offroad tyres up 15% on January 1 and then again in March. It's not the tyre manufacturers getting all the money, its the bloody government!

I have owned 3 sets of BFG MT's (the "original" flavour), 2 sets of 33x12.5 15" and 1 set of 35x12.5 15" - the 33's I never had any real trouble with, they were ok on the road and I staked a sidewall driving over a wrecker car once, road noise and grip were acceptable for a mudder. they are ok on rocks but frankly pretty ordinary in actual mud. wen I stepped up to 35's, I tore sidewalls all over the place, I don't know if it was a quality issue or just having that much more sidewall to expose to the sharp stuff or trying to drive harder stuff because I had bigger tyres. I remember one day up at Lithgow/Newnes I tore 1 sidewall from rim to tread on a root sticking up from the side of a track - travelling at about 30km/h with about 30psi in. accepted that with good grace but then tore a second sidewall a very shot time later playing in the quarry - on what I don't know. I had to stitch up a sidewall with copper wire and about 30 tread plugs to limp it back into Lithgow. it was a cool repair, but I didn't want to trust it to Bells Line all the way home :)

I also had issues with a couple of the 35's coming apart with the tread delaminating and going very wobbly but those tyres were old by then and had spent a lot of time aired down, I think it was a fatigue issue that would be expected of any tyre driven a long distance at well below optimum operating pressure. They are a radial and as such are a ROAD oriented design, in some ways sticking an offroad tread patter on the outside of a radial tyre is a worst-of-both-worlds compromise :)

I also think they wear too fast but again probably related to offroad, low pressure use and expecting formula 1 performance on the highway :)

having gone from them to Cooper STT's, my feeling is the coopers have it for long life and sidewall strength, however they are noisier on the road, and the tread compound is so hard that it comes off in chunks, right down to the steel belts. the BFG's only did that after a long, hard life, the coopers did it the first time they were aired down on rocks.

They are a good compromise tyre. I would consider them if the copers wear out before the vehicle does (about 80,000km and average 45% tread left across 6 tyres, not including the missing tread blocks :)

I have the BFG KMs in 33s on my cruiser and find then to grip well on the road wet or dry. Off road there not a bad tyre except for them stupid rim protectors which catch mud and cause them to leak. This used to happen to a few people who I used to 4wd with that had them so it's a very common problem.

Would I buy them again?? Only if they pissed off them rim protectors as thats really there only fault.

And in relation to BFG Muddies, I've run 285/75/16 BFG Muddies for years now and although I haven't tried the newer KM2 versions, I've always had a good run from them.

However I also know that the radial Silverstone MT117 Sports (can you still get these) are brilliant on and off road. Like all muddies they are a bit noisy but still a good option if still available.

Thankyou!!! Glad I wasn't the only one with rim protector issues. As said they'd be ok if they got rid of that.
The rim protector causes a stiff spot and when the tyre rolls abit it opens up the side and dirt and mud gets inbetween the rim and protector causing leaks. Serously who are they kidding??? A flap of rumber is going to stop you hitting the rim. This design was used in agricultural, used to stop stalks getting in the side of the rim. Not good for 4wd when the tyres are aired down. M2c

ive had bfg ko at's before not mt's but with rim protectors
and i found same problem with slow leaks running
no less than 16psi ,crap got into beads, swampers
did the same @9psi but not as much as the bfg's
guys at tire shop ended up putting some kind
of tire seal round the beads, which seemed to fix
problem on bfg's ,and that was only after about
the sixth flat tire.in less than 1 month of fitting

I've got BFG Mud KM2's on my Paj, never had any issues with the rim protector although it is a dumb idea... I find they are great on sand and mud etc, but not fantastic on rock.

would still buy again. (I buy whatever is going cheap 2nd hand on these foums ebay etc. :) )

I have just purchased a brand new set of km2's in 33" for my troopy.

When i left the tyre shop I instantly noticed a difference between the mt/r's i was running and the new bfg's. The km2's are the most quiet mud terrain i have used yet. They hold onto the bitumen both wet and dry as good as the bfg all terrains on our terrano do. They roll really well when I back off as well. I havent yet had the chance to take them off road yet, buttttt, there is a little muddy slippery spot near my mail box (gotta love rural life :lol: ) and with the mt/r's on I would slip and slide through it when taking off but with the km2's I drove straight out :armsup: Any mud that get stuck in the tread quickly gets flicked out in all directions straight away. So as it stands these tyres are looking good so far. I am heading to the snow this comming weekend so there will be plenty of mud and stuff for me to see how these things go in the goop. I will report back with the performance asap.

Oh and I might as well add, the sex appeal is darn good. They dont look like much in pics but when put up against my mates new mtz's the bfg made the mickey thompson look like an all terrain. Allthough the mickey thompson side biters are more agressive.

I got the km2's in mud, snow, wet clay and gravel today. And all I can say is WOW!!!!!! They are AMAZING!!!! I have used mongrels, bfg mudies (the older style) and wrangler mt/r's and I can now say with confidence that the new km2's shit all over the other tyres I have used. The mongrels were better in the deep mud, but not by that much but the bfg out performs the mongrel in all other areas. The wranglers are no comparrison, the km2 is a better tyre on and off road by far.

The tyres get two thumbs up from me, now im trying to wear down the wifes tyres so i can get a set for her car.

At 341 per tyre for a 33 from wide tread in ferntree gully i reckon theyre good value too.

I've just had some 32/11.5/15 KM2s fitted to my GQ.
Obviously the first thing you do when you get a new toy is go and play with it, so.....
We packed up and went to for drive for the afternoon.

mostly beach driving and dry dusty track.

First impressions. they have very little road noise, coming from some 1/2 worn kelly AWRs the km2 barely make anymore noise then kellys did.
The ride is noticeably better on the black top, they seem to soak up the smaller bumps better then my old tires.

The tire place put 45PSI in them, so i figure i'll drive them like that for the 40min highway drive out the creek. Again smooth not to noisy truck doesn't wander or tramline like the old tires did. On the trip back i ran them at 36psi, i'll be sticking with 36psi on the black top.

on the dirt i aired them down to 25psi (same pressure i used to use on the kellys) again smoother then the old tires on the rocky track in. Anyone who has been to ollera creek outside Townsville will know how rough that track is. Being the tracks were dry i can't compare these tires on the the dry stuff, as the only time i had the kellys out there it was wet.

On the beach though, I rate the MK2 very well on sand. hills i used to have to hit in second low with revs up, i can now walk up in first low at 1500rpm. 40 to 50km/h along the beach they responded well to steering input and seemed to need less power to travel at these speeds.
