fj 40 disc brake conversion

fj 40 disc brake conversion
looking for an easy change over from drums to disc brakes on front. Iam fitting holden 304 and 4 speed auto to fj 40 shorty so need to upgrade. Have been told 60 series discs will fit is this an easy swap and what is required for full change over.

Ok, I'm terribly sorry to have understated the price. I was basing it on the fact that I bought front and rear 40 diffs for $250 (yes the disc front) a couple of years ago and I assumed that the price may have gone down further since then. Yeah late model 40 master cylinder should be all you need. Bolts right on inplace of the original. 40,60,75,80 and hilux all have the same mounting pattern onto the booster I'm pretty sure (well I'm sure 40,60 and 75 do), so there should not need to be any mounting mods, only location of brake pipes differ. Some have had success with the standard drum brake master too in standard form, or by removing the residual valve. Its a bit of a mixed bag of results. Best to do the disc swap and play with masters as you go.
one thing to keep in mind is that the DISK master cylinder is designed to work with rear drums with 1 slave per side.croozy wrote:As far as your master cylinder goes you only need a disc brake master cylinder to suit a disc front. I just used one off a later model 40 series

Whe I did my conversion I still used my original master cylinder for when my car was 4 wheel drum. All I did was remove the return restrictor from the front side of the master cylinder to let the fluid return quicker when I took my foot off the brake so the fluid didn't hold the front calipers on. I had also done a 60 series rear conversion at the same time I changed the front to disc & using the old master cylinder worked fine.
I only changed mine to the later master cylinder when the original one shat itself last year.

we used hilux discs swivel hubs etc on my mates 45 and used the std master cyl with the resid pressure valve removed still goin and stoppin awesome after 2 years

4 years ago i could not give 4 front away and the 3 rear that i had converted to disc all with new disc and recon clappers away so they went to scrap yard got $300 for the lot so 300 dived by 7 that would be $42.85 each so they do come up put people don't have the foresight to buy them till they need them then wing that they have to pay top dollar. remember i tried to GIVE them away first

Yeah mate mine lasted 6 years before it needed replacing. It is a common thing to do.
