navara 3.0L diesel or 2.5L ????
guys i recently posted a thread about purchasing a new nissan navara, i have decided to get a ST-R D22 however afetr some further research i found it is alot cheaper to get a second hand D22
however al the second hand ones are 3.0L turbo diesel not 2.5L turbo diesel, assumign i will be getting a standard lift kit on it which would be better for 4wding preferably on the beach??? and how big is the difference in fuel consumption does anybody know???

hi ol mate i have the current str d22 2.5 litre and i love it there is more than enough grunt there for me, the 3 litre does go a little harder, i have driven both and both are good , fuel wise the 2.5 runs a little longer on a tank , but still it all comes down to how hard you drive it . I to couldnt decide new or second hand, in the end 29,900 new gave me 3 years waranty and peace of mind, and im aware of what its been used for, no broken parts or abuse , thats what it came down to. I fitted a snorkel, foam air filter, bull bar and winch all myself, the next thing is a dobson 2 inch lift kit and task is complete. Its a great car for the money no problems at all and its just about to turn one year old (toyotas are to dear and they still think there the only 4by worth buying...wankers...) good luck with your decission and send me a personal if you have any questions cheers mate steve...

id learn towards a 2.5 certainly , as you might not be aware there was a problem with the zd 30 blowing up more so in patrols but navaras did do it as well , this was early on in the piece and you rarely see it now however im sure if you searched this forum you would find a stack of information on it , working at a dealer if i had to have one it would just be ticking in the back of my mind all the time.

sure the ZD30 has a bad rep but most faults are known and its no where near as bad as the patrol (assuming its 2004-2008).
economy, simply change the muffler and you will match the 2.5 for economy. add intercooler and you should do better than the 2.5.
they had to comply with new emission standard so hence the change to the 2.5 motor.
i know a few guys here that have turned down a free upgrade to the 2.5 (paid for by their work). they like the old 3 litre better.
the big problem is generally that good 2nd hand utes are hard to get. you could simply be buying someone elses problem.

i agree with bz no 3 piston is a ticking bomb in the 3 litres but i only know of them melting down because friends put after market chips in them and dont get them dyno tuned so no 3 gets to hot no fuel and boom bye bye but standard wise im not that sure, any way my 2.5 is damm good. Think about this if you buy a new hilux its 54,000, plus what ever else, in three years it might be worth 32,000 if your lucky, thats a loss of around 22,000, fact, str navara 30,990 plus what ever else, in three years if i take off 22.000 that makes my nissan worth 8,990, mmm, can you buy a 3 year old navara for 8,990..... dont think so, more l;ike in the 20,000 range so you do the maths...fact....

have seen every piston fail , we usedto put bets on as to when we did the compression tests what one would be gone. all problems aside with the 3 litre they do go great its all a matter of what you want to spend and are prepared to spend in the case of a failure... it would always be on my mind , in saying that there is one that comes into work with 390,000 kms still on the original engine never had the head off or anything (cough cough) 5000 km oil and filter changes... as was mentioned in another thread the maintanance is something that gets a bit of hush hush when they do blow up.. nobody wants to talk about what they didnt do in terms of looking after the car.. both good trucks and the YD isnt yet proven itself as being bulletproof either in australian conditions as it only came out here last year. since its newer it is still under the 3/100,000 whereas most of the 3 litres are getting towards the end.. and usualy a used car dealer warranty isnt worth the paper its written on if you read the fine print

couldnt agree with you more, like all diesels, regular oil changes and good clean filters are a must. Why do the pistons fail so much in the 3 litre engines, surely they must be leaning out or piss poor fuel.

that motor has been in the D40's for 4-5 years. i think the basic motor is more than tough enough. i think there is some differences in turbo. the only thing that does worry me is the smaller oil capasity.IN24BZ wrote:YD isnt yet proven itself as being bulletproof either in australian conditions as it only came out here last year.
quite right about the servicing. to many people treat them like there are a big lazy motor which can get away with less servicing.

its not that they are leaning out rather that they are running to rich. blocked up air filter (the filter is rather small) not only casues turbo to be inefficent but also draws more blowby in and also more EGR in. dosn't take much to make it have excessive inlet air temps.
add crap fuel and poor piston cooling due to poor engine oil.......its not suprising they go bang.
doesn't matter what motor is, they don't last long with poor servicing.

Tweake i fitted a tjm snorrkel and put a foam hi flow unifilter in my air box, will that help the 2.5 breath easier ( iwas told it would ) and im going through the motions at the moment of getting a new 2.5" mandrel exaust, after market ECU fitted, and all dynoed up @ ATX Turbo endineering (as soon as they get back to me with a reasonable price for the whole job ). But what im worried about is my truck is only one year old and arter i spend all this doe on mod improvements will nissan still honor the rest of my warranty. cheers steve

i do not like "high flow" filters on late model diesels. the extra dust they tend to let through fouls up the MAF and that causes all sorts of problems. ditto is the filter is over oiled.
exhaust, i think they have a 2" or 2.25" mandrel exhaust to start with. i would look at just changing the rear muffler.
if you have the variable turbo then exhaust, chip and filter mods will change how the turbo operates and you may need to adjust the turbo (or change how its controlled).
boost and EGT guages would be the first thing to fit.
big exhaust and chiping will certainly void any warranty on the motor.
ahh yeah had my head stuck in D22 land , was forgetting about the D40 thing thay have been out for quite a wile now.. usualy ascosiated with the 3litre failure was oil on the underside of the piston crown all gummed up like it was burned on (too long of an oil change interval?) and temp issues.. a zd could benifit from a decent intercooler snorkle and exhaust system.. as for the air filters... if its going in a nissan its genuine only... unless you like replacing maf sensors wich you wont have a problem with on the zd30 navaras only the patrol.

interesting. certainly oil interval is very long. i think the effect of poor fuel and egr are underrated. even with CI-4 long run oil 14000km,s and its starting to thicken right up. get rid of the egr and the oil is like brand new.
i wonder if the caked on oil was just constant high temps. especially if turbo inlet temps are hitting 40. the turbo's just do not like like thin air one bit. add in egr which bumps inlet manifold temps up even more......
