Ok I'm looking to buy a new truck and these are my 3 leading contenders at the moment.
1. 2001 Nissan Patrol GUII 4.2L turbo diesel 5 speed manual 166000km for $20000
2. 2002 Toyota Landcruiser HZJ105R Base 4.2L diesel 5 speed manual 128000km for $20000.
3. 2001 Toyota Landcruiser GXL 4.5L petrol 5 speed manual 147000km for $18000.
Out of these above vehicles which would you choose and why?

I love my turbo diesel manual 80series, it tows my tool trailer pretty easy, you dont know its there. The turbo diesel has plenty of torque to get the trailer moving and copes with freeway speeds well.
If I had to upgrade I would definitely look at GUs. wouldnt go for a N/A diesel specially if your towing regularly, I wouldnt choose a petrol either, as you said with a petrol, you pay at the bowser

Ok after spending all day out trolling the car yards of southeast QLD I’ve finally settled on a 100 series cruiser for my next truck (Patrols were too small and uncomfortable, I’m 6’6”). It will be used for daily driver towing a 6x4 tool trailer and as a weekend/holiday tourer towing a customline camp trailer. Problem is I can’t decide on the power plant, either the 4.2L 1HZ diesel or the 4.5L 1FZFE Petrol!!!
These are the problems I see –
1HZ – VERY slow and under powered (was flat out driving its self around on the test drive, let alone being loaded up with a trailer!)
1FZFE – Nice power delivery, much more lively, smoother, But can just tell that it is much thirstier motor.
Both problems have fixes, add a turbo to the 1HZ, or add a gas setup to the 1FZFE but I’m not sure which is the best way to go.
Scenario 1. Add a turbo to the 1HZ, cost between $3000-$4000, end result roughly around 125 kw @ 3400 rpm and 390 nm @ 2000 rpm and roughly 14-16L per 100KM (these power figures are only slightly more then the new hilux diesel D4D in a much heavier car)
After researching the turbo conversions for the 1HZ I’ve found that they can lead to premature failure of the motor by damaging the pistons and requiring a total rebuild (Big $$$ for a diesel). Has anyone else heard of, or experienced this? I’m slightly concerned with putting a turbo on a non turbo designed motor. What is the best turbo kit on the market for power and RELIABILITY?
Scenario 2. Add gas to the 1FZFE, Cost $2000 after gov rebate, end result 165 kw @ 4600 rpm and 387 nm @ 3600 rpm. As for fuel/gas mileage I’ve been told anywhere between 18-28L per 100 km!!!
This set up would give me the most power but I’ll be paying for it at the pump. Can anyone with a 1FZFE cruiser out there give me an idea what the fuel mileage is like and with what sort of loads? The other negative is that the 1FZFE will have a shorter touring range between fill ups as the gas is consumed faster then unleaded. Has anyone out there had any experience with injected lpg set ups? Are they better then the carby style set ups?

I'd go for the GU simply for the fact it has a TD42T. If you dont mind paying for fuel, go for the petrol cruiser.
Whoever told you that putting a turbo on a 130,000km old diesel obviously has NO CLUE. Albeit a different motor (nissan), there's a few people on here that have put turbo's on 400,000-500,000km old motors. I am currently putting a turbo on my 220,000km 18 year old motor.
If you really feel the need for a Yota diesel, then turbo it at a proper workshop, not just a "bolt on and drive" type kit. Get it dyno tuned properly too.
PS. OR, just do it properly the first time and get the Patrol....

Judging by the stuff i've read, I think that the GU Patrol is by far the best buy- it's already turbo'd (no extra expenses there) and it's pretty economical too. That's just my opinion, coming from a non-bias NG Pajero/Suzuki Sierra/2H Landcruiser 60 driver!

I would rate the patrol the better buy here, and i dont even like patrols.
However, if you pefer driving the cruiser, go the petrol and drop the gas on it. Will be cheaper than running a TD in the long run with diesel prices regularly up to 10c/L dearer than petrol. And what, 60 centrs/L dearer than gas?

im a patrol man myself and im looking at landcruisers for my daily/work vehicle. they are SSOOOOOO much more comfy to drive and just feel smoother than the patrols.
as for the 1hz. thousands of people do it without any problems, remember you are on a 4wd website where most people come to talk about PROBLEMS with cars so itll be biased to the bad.
as said earlier, get the turbo kit tuned by someone you trust to do it, not all dyno shops are good at tuning, especially diesels. search around for one you like.

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
I just recently had my first 100 series experience driving to Tuff Truck from Brissie and back and I have to say...
What a farkin over-rated, uncomfortable, POS they are.
It was a petrol engined, live axel front with a 3" lift and 33" MT/Rs.
I found the auto to be schizophrenic at best and the engine was excellent at drinking petrol without giving the benefits of horse-power. The front seats are uncomfortable, the rear seats are shocking.
I have been a passenger in an IFS turbo diesel and they seem to ride much better and have some awesome punch from the engine, but its IFS.
IMHO the Patrol rides much better and the seats are far more suitable to long distances than a 100 series.

for me it was the exact opposite!! the patrol was uncomfortable.
when i bought a car for my daily and to tow my comp car i looked at both the patrol and cruiser, i chose the cruiser over the patrol due to the more internal space, i hate being bunched up!! also i wanted fold down rear doors not barn doors.
i was looking at petrol and the cruiser has slightly more power over the petrol patrol.
on mine i get around 400kms out of a 100l GAS and thats lifted on 33s.
im planning on putting some extractors on and a 2.5 system through

The Issues with the 1HZ and turbo really come about by guys setting them up and trying to get the 1HZ to run similar to the 1HD Turbo. To do that they had to boost them up quite high (i think 14 - 15 pounds) after they realised that Pistons were melting and no one knew what a pyro gauge was for Turbo fitters now set them up at 10 Pounds.
I have spoken to nearly every Turbo fitter (that are of good quality and are recommended) and they all tell a similar story.
I recently spoke to a truck driver that set up his Troopy (with a 1HZ) and turboed it himself. He built it as a Pilot vehicle for his wife to drive. He said he was running 13 pounds of boost but educated his wife to drive to the Pyro and also fitted a turbo timer.
Anyway, it has already done 750,000 K's in 6 years since he put the turbo on and has never had an issue.
He also recently fitted Gas (sequent 2) and a plug in chip (don't know what brand) and it goes like the clappers.
