Mongrels
Mongrels
Has anybody tried the Mongrel tyres, 32 x 11 on a Suzuki, or other vehicle? my mate Joey wants first hand info to help with his tyre choices..

I took em for a few runs b4 I stripped the zook down. The Mongrels are marked as 32x10.5 but measure 31" (I think I measured this off the car, on an 8" rim at about 30 PSI). If you currently run 31s I would suggest you be careful when fitting them as the slightly larger diameter makes more difference than I thought and consequently I did not trim enough under my front guards. Hence the side lugs are cut up pretty bad on that pair.
My observations...
IMO they are a pretty good match for a mildly modded zook, and there is no other tyre I know of that is that aggressive for that amount of $$$. The only downer is that there is only 1 size.
My observations...
- They are noisy on road, but not as bad as I thought they'd be. And they ride on road pretty well (i think because of the 2 rows of centre blocks that run the centre of the tread pattern). I'd be quite happy to daily drive these tyres although I have not tested their performance on wet asphalt (which I predict will be very average). I was thinking of experimenting with some siping of the centre blocks, which will probably help with traction on the rocks too.
On a lose dirt hill climb they seemed to do fine, even not aired down.
In sand a normal MT will dig u in quick if you're not careful. These bastards are like a 1 way ticket to Beijing. To get any performance on sand you're going to need beadlocks & single digit pressures I reckon.
Mud! I'm not a big fan of mud but these tyres are. In the name of testing (OK, I was trying to get my mate in his TJ stuck) I was stupid enough to drive through a mangrove swap (yes, it was salt) and was pleasantly suprised when I didn't get stuck.

I drove on a set of these for the first time on Saturday night and I must say I was very sceptical about there performance but I was very impressed on how they went. Even on road they drove very nicely if you ignored the noise which wasn't as bad as I thought they would be as well.
For an inexpensive offroad tyre they are worth considering.
As being a dedicated Goodyear Man I would still prefer tham as they do work better in the rocks but the Mongrels Are better in the sloppy stuff.

my mate and i were sponsored by Mongrel for the winch challanges when we were running the suzuki ute, and at 8PSI they worked briallialnty
we also used some BFG AT's to drive on to the event and we got the shits with them and found that the Mongrels drove heaps better
there a low pitch droning sound it's loud but bearable, my MTR's are louder and a higher pitch sound which is really anoyng

Was that the first big step on Slippery?
They were impressive. It looked like he had all the traction needed every time I saw him.
No the last climb where Tim popped the bead .

Perhaps Nigel might be an option,
Last time I spoke to him he was not phased about his zook and was wanting to offload the mongrels.
Is Joey running Mongrels now???
